Hi im 29. 5 years ago I had adhesions removed from my felopian tubes.
Having still had no success I went back to hospital for a consultation. My consultant told me I would be placed on the list for IVF treatment on NHS.
Through that month I had the normal blood tests and went back for the results. Which were all fine because I had had them the first time around anyway.
I was then sent in to see my surgon who told me that the reason he spend 4 hours removing adhesions was because he knew I would be entitled to NO free treatment as my husband has a child from a previous relationship..
Has enyone ever heard of this before?
Is it right?
What chances do you think I have of appealing?
I just cant understand why I wasnt told this in the beggining. I would have loads of money saved by now if id have known.

Hi Soozie - Welcome to the Site. Unfortunately, it is true that some health authorities disallow any NHS cycles if one of the partners already has children. Others only disallow if the couple has a child/children between them. The NHS funding is just a post code lottery I'm afraid.
I don't know why you weren't told that in the first place - I suppose during the timespan, their funding rules could have changed ..?

It is as Sand says just down to a postcode lottery. I did read in my local paper just yesterday how things (In our area anyway) are changing with IVF on the NHS. It did mention that rules will be relaxed where one partner already has a child from a previous relationship. It might be worth checking with your health authority if things might also be changing there. Its a very unfair rule. I hope it works out for you.

I would definately check that out as i have 2 friends who needed IVF, the first had no children (female factor) but her partner did (from previous relationship) but they didn't live with them and she got NHS funding, however my other friend had a child from a previous relationship and her husband (male factor very low sperm count) didn't and they could not get funding!!!!
I do agree i think it depends on which consultant in which area you see!!!

WIll try not to get on my soap box but I am afraid despite what the government guidlines are, it is still a postocde lottery and it sucks!
We meet all the criteria, neither myself or my husband have children and according to the government guidlines we are entiltled to "1 free go"
HOWEVER, our local trust (new forest district) say that what the government say are only guidlines and due to lack of funds they WONT be funding, full stop.the end......
I dont begrudge anyone getting funding, even if they have children from a previous relationship as I think we all deserve it but I cant help myself from getting angry and frustrated when neither of us are blessed with children at all...it makes my heart ache.............I watch TV programmes on IVF and see couples having funded ivf for a 2nd child and whilst I am happy for them, it also makes me sad and angry......
Please, I hope I have not offended anyone....I am angry at the authorities, not the couples receiving funding, after all it is not their fault and as I say, we all deserve this chance of happiness......
Good luck with whatever happnens and I hope you are 1 of the lucky ones to get funding.......

It definately is a post code lottery, there is no funding in my area North Hampshire whatever the circumstances. so we have had to go private.
me 38 DH 43 TTC 7.5 yrs. 1st IVF June 05 ended in severe OHSS never made it to ET. FET Nov 05 -ive. FET April 06 -ive FET June 06 OMG BFP

Is your GP sympathetic as this may help you case if you decide to appeal.

ThankYou to all that have replied. It was all much appreciated. I have now booked a consultation to go private. And to SJ Brown I am discusted that you were treated in that way and now reslise that the system just isnt fairXXX
With regards to funding, unfortunately things do depend on where you live. VERY unfair. However, it's worth checking with your local authorities as rules are changing all the time.
We have just had IVF on funding - were told that one cycle is funded and that was that (which we were very grateful for!). Unfortunately it hasn't worked, but we did get a number of embies which have been frozen.
Our clinic told us on Friday that rules in our area (South Warwickshire) have just changed, and they have agreed that anyone who has had one fresh cycle, can have up to 2 subsequent frozen cycles funded as well, which we are eligible for.
This wasn't the case when we started, so is a real bonus for us. Things can change in a short space of time, so it's worth while to keep asking the question to see if things have changed.

The rule will have to change quite a bit if me and my DH were able to get NHS treatment.
He has children from his first marriage so I can understand we are less of a priority there, but there should be something for us. But, we also fail because he has had a vasectomy. It is like their attitude is "you got yourself in this mess....."
What upset me the most if that we didn't get an explanation just a letter through for a private appointment not NHS, no explanations of why we hadn't got NHS. I had to ring for them to fax me through a copy of their criteria. It is quite upsetting when you see it in black and white.
Fortuntaely we can fund a couple of cycles ourselves if necessary, my heart really goes out to those who aren't as lucky.

IVF NHS FUNDING
I had a child 17 years ago when I was 19 yrs old and then met smy Husband when she was 19mths old approx. I have had 4/5 m/c since then with my husband. I have been treated for endo and almost died with last pregnancy that may have been twins, lost one and then other was suspected ectopic. I was expecting IVF clinic to refuse me as I had a child, but I think they have taken into consideration the amount of determination and bad luck as now my hubbie has a low sperm count due to age etc. I assume they are funding it because they have not mentioned fees etc. We are waiting for my gynae records to reach them, a signature from GP to confirm good parent materials and HIV and HEP blood tests. Gyneacology reports will confirm what I have told them, GP has signed form and blood tests have no reason to be other than NEGATIVE. The consultant told us that the quicker we get these documents to him the quicker we can start treatment. We have assumed we have been accepted, is there a reason we can be turned down now? Please advise.

well where do i start.... i have been trying for a baby for over 5 years now and under the hospital for over 2 years now, 1st i was told i have pcos now i have just found out my tube's are badly damaged. I am wait for my hospital date to have a laparoscopy but have been told i have a less than 30% change of being able to falling pregnant naturaly. I asked about IVF but was told I can get it on the NHS due to the fact that my husband already has a child. He was 16 when he had his daughter and his ex married and he dosen't get to see her at all. I cant beleive this is fair and wondered if anyone has any ideas what i can do, there's no way we can afford IVF we both work but there's just no way we could afford it.

I feel the same as you. In a way it has made me feel lucky that we get to see my husbands son. But this doesn,t make you feel any less angry that you cant get help for yourself.
I have just decided to save. I have been saving now for 6 months and almost have the money together but still am apprehensive as to weather it will work and I wont be able to get the money together again for a long time.
