Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone would be able to give me a rough guide of how long it would take from deciding on IVF and actually starting treatment? My husband and I are waiting on results and if they are not good (we pretty much def know the news will be bad) we want to start IVF. I dont really know much about it, and we are from AUCK, NZ, so anyone who can help, please do! Also we will prob go private so hopefuly wont have a long waiting list!
Hi there. I would estimate a min. of 3-6m to be on the safe side. Even private clinics have waits sometimes.
If you're going totally private and don't need a referral from your current GP, you'll probably have to go through the bank of tests that clinics need before they start. If you've had most of these already, ask your hospital/GP what the procedure is for transferring them to a private clinic. Or, if you know which clinic you'll use, speak to them. There may be time constraints eg. they want x test to be no more than 2m old etc. Some clinics like you to attend an open evening, esp. the larger ones, where they give you and other interested couples an overview of how they do things. Clinics often have their preferred MO and have slightly different meds/procedures.
If you've not been referred to it already, try to get a copy of Fertility & Conception by Zita West. She gives about 25% of the book over to assisted conception and has not only lots of advice prior/during/after tmt but also explains the different procedures, the abbreviations/terms and what you can expect at each stage. I use my book constantly as do many on this board.
You might have come across them already but there's an Aussie and Kiwi chat/support group on the General Forum. Just one kiwi I think, Jg/Jag(?), she may have some more local advice for you.
Good luck with your results.
Debra.
