pcos and treatments

Post by jackoa21 »

Hello all... I am looking for some advice and guideance. Here is the scoop. We have been TTC for about 1 1/2 years. I was diganosed with PCOS last march. Started on Metformin and than moved to Met and clomid. I did O for the 3 months with Clomid but no luck. My RE than suggested that we move on to Follistem injections and IUI. We have had one unsecssful IUI. My question is should we move on. With a decent SA from DH and my known condition is IUI even worth the effort? I really apprecate any feedback or sucess story's to get me through.. thanks all :D

Hi there and welcome to the site!

Every step we take is worth the effort as it teaches us something about our bodies and how we react to different drugs...
Have you had an HSG done?If your tubes are clear, theres no reason why IUI's shouldn't work for you.
Good Luck dear!

I have PCOS. I only just got diagnosed about a month ago. Before that they knew I wasn't ovulating and my cycle was all over the place. I had clomid for 6 months which made me ovulate but still not pregnant. My Consultant said he'd check my tubes and then start me on injections, ii that didn't work he would send us for IVF. I asked about IUI and he said, no point IVF has a higher success rate and we'd probably just waste time doing IUI.
Anyway, he said that before I was diagnosed with PCOS. I saw another consultant for my HyCosy (checking tubes) and when he realised what was wrong with me he told me to continue on clomid for another 4 - 6 months. I'm not too happy about that as if it doesn't work after 6 months, it doesn't tend to work.

SO, I read my Zita West book again (get this if you don't have it, its great!), read up on PCOS and am now doing a lot of natural things. I have changed my diet, lower carbs, more protein (but not atkins diet), getting exercise and having acupuncture. Since this I just had a normal cycle without using clomid. DH is away so couldn't try but I am sure I ovulated. I have given up caffeine, alcohol, chocolate and sweet stuff (most of the time!). I started all this a few months ago anyway after reading Zitas book but then changed a few more things to suit PCOS. I have had 3 acupuncture sessions and my period this month was lighter and for the first time I took no pain killers! I could not believe it! There has been a lot of research about acu and what it does for PCOS. There just has to be something in it!
I'm surprised they sent you for IUI so quickly. Why not let you try injectables to make you ovulate.

So my advice is try doing some of these natural things to help things along.
My sister who also has PCOS didn't respond to clomid either but got pregnant just taking injections, it took about 4 months on them I think.

Please email me if you want any more information.
good luck

thank you for your replies.. I ran through a bunch of test when they first diagnosed me.. One they shot dye up to make sure everything was open.. They said it looked good....My RE did say that after 3 iuis they would do a procedure where they go through my belly button. is that what you guys are talking about? thanks for all your support....

the test I had (HyCosy) was similar to what you went through (dye through tubes). The test where they go through your belly button is probably a laproscopy. That gives them a better look at things, they can see for sure if you had endometriosis for example. This is done under general anaesthetic. I haven't had that myself but my cousin had it. She had endo but already suspected this from her severe symptoms!

Hi -
I was diagonosed with PCOS at 17 (I'm 36 now). I was on birth control pills from 17 to 35 to regulate my period. When I went off, I got my period 2 times in 6 months - both times after doing accupuncture.

I am now 11 weeks pregnant from IVF.

We tried clomid for 3 months, the last with IUI, then did injectables with IUI. None of that worked.

Thank goodness, the first IVF worked.

Clomid made me crazy. The injectables, although not fun, were better tolerated by my body and emotions.

Good luck!!

terri yes the RE told me if the 3 IUI's did not work (with injectibles) than they do the lap test. Part of me just thinks I should skip the next IUI and go right to IVF....
susan p how many iui's did you do with injectibles? Did they do a laproscopy on you before IVF

Hi-
We only did 1 IUI with injectables - the doctor felt that because I produced so many eggs (even though the IUI didn't work) that if we did another one - the chance of getting pregnant with quads or more was high.
He felt that was too big a risk for my health and the potential babies' health.

I never had laprosopy... why do they do that?

I did have the HSG/dye into the tubes/make sure everything is open test.

Good luck

Susan
as far as I know the HSG is to make sure the tubes are good and open and the lap test is to check for endo.. I am not totally sure though.. It sounds like the IVF was the best thing for you guys and I keep wondering if we should just go that route too

If they suspect you might have endo - maybe it makes sense to get the lapro.
I know there are lots of people for whom IUIs work - I think there are even threads about it on this site ...

Good luck.
Let us know how it all goes.

i was diagnosed with pcos about 5 years ago and was on clomid for almost 1 year. never ovulated with clomid. hence did an iui session in 2003 with injectbles and it was -ve. so took a break for almost 2 years. in the mid of this year decided to go and see a pcos specilist dr and told him that would like to go through ivf. when i went to see him 1st time, i mentioned about some pelvic pain and he referred me to see a specialist to confirm i dont have endometriosis (hope i have spelt this correctly). When i went to see the specilaist she mentioned that they would like to do a laparoscopy. Just when she explained to me the procedure i decided not to go for it and just go back to my dr and tell him to start ivf procedure. started on the meds to get AF, then on 3rd day of af started lupron. after taking about 1 week of lupron inj, took follistin, repronex and lupron for close to 4 days. when it was getting close to er, i was going in everyday for ultrasounds and blood tests. they had me stop on repronex after 4 days of taking it and also on follistin after 6 days. they wanted me to coast since my estardial was going up very fast and had almost 10-12 follicles on each side. just the day when i was going to take hcg shot ( the final shot) i started getting major cramps. called the dr's office and they said to wait since my results from the estradial was going to come back. after 2 hours started to throw up and was in a lot of pais. the dr's office called and said not to take hcg since the estradila levels had gone upto 8900 and it is a case of overstimulation. i felt like my life had ended. after 3 weeks of injecticles and trying to keep PMA, it was very sad. Tried to convince the dr to still try to proceed with the hcg inj and he said it is life threating. had to be admitted in the hospital and given pain killers and ivf and something to stop the throwing up.
Went to the dr and he said they will start the next ivf in feb-06 but this time with smaller doses of follistin and repronex.

were you on the injecitbles with your iui? I know it was negative but if you dont mind me asking why did you go right to the IVF? So are you waiting until Feb 06 to start again..I overstimulated this last month and today was my cylcle day 5 ultrasound to see if we could try for this month with the injectibles and possibly a iui.. last month was hard being on the pill (due to overstimuilation) you try so hard to get pregnant than you have to take the pill. I am somewhat excited to have this right before the holidays and somewhat scared.....

Angelbaby,
Sorry, I missed your last question.
I did not take metformin.

For the IUI with injectable - I was on Gonal F and Cetratide.
For the IVF, I was on Lupron, Gonal F and then the HsG (or is it HcG) shot.

What's metformin?

-Good luck!

hey jackoa21

sorry for the late response - went out of town for a vacation was tired of all the medications/shots and then overstimulation.

My IUI was with inj, but did not have a +ve. hence waited for a while. A friend of mine who also had PCOS went thru 4 IUI but all -ve. So another dr recomended her to go for IVF since PCOS has small chances of +ve with IUI (This is what I was told- but am not sure if it is absolutely true).
And hence we decided to go for IVF. Me and DH decided only 2 IVF's. The 1st one was a failure due to oevrstimulation hence praying harder and harder that the 2nd one is my only hope and it will work.

The dr said to wait for 2-3 months before we do the next cycle and he will put me on milder dosage of the shots than last time.
