If I had a choice I would have been knocked out completely. I had to get extra drugs so I wasn't with it anyway, and I wasn't with it the rest of the day either. Some places do generals for EC, but I think that's there choice, not ours unfortunatley.

I did not have the choice for my first IVF, i was under General. I still woke up in a lot of pain! I guess EC went a bit wrong for me!
I am doing IVF in Jan and i have the choice, i will discuss it with my doc, but i think i will choose sedation, i cant be more painful than last time anyway!!
Wish you the best
take care

I had a general. I had more than 30 eggs in there so it was a long process. If I had the choice I would go for a general but only because I would prefer that to any potential pain!
Good luck with your decision.

I had sedation for my EC. I remember it being painful but I don't remember the pain if that makes sense! To be honest I think I would choose sedation over general only because it takes so much longer to recover from a general. Whichever you choose the pain afterwards is going to be pretty similar!!
Hi, I would always choose sedation as GA makes me sick and weepy and who needs the extra recovery time?
I've had EC 4 times and always with sedation. I may have been one of the lucky ones but I tend to fall asleep half way through (although it's interesting and I wanted to stay awake) and not suffer anything more than mild AF type pains afterwards, although I've never had more than 10 eggs for collection which might be a factor.
My clinic don't offer a choice, I think most have their one way of EC and that's it.
Good luck
Debra

Game Over.
Dates: Aug 02 - May 06
Tries: 5 fresh + 4 frozen.
Results: 1 daughter, 2 m/c, 1 ectopic.
I have just completed my first cycle of ivf and was really worried about the EC. I shouldn't have bothered. I was highly sedated and can't remember a thing abouth it. I was only under for about 20 mins and had no pain when i came round or over the next couple of days.
It does depend on how good you are with needles, pain etc, but i prefered not to know or see anything.
Hope this helps

I was told by my hospital that some women say they didn't feel a thing and others say it was the most painful experience of their life! I didn't have the choice and was sedated (and given Pethadine). I found it very painful and if I was doing it again would opt for a general. I also had a bad reaction to the Pethadine.

Thank you for your replies. We went to see our clinic today for our information / implications appointment and they suggested that General was best as it meant that I would not be wiggling around! It was a very long appointment - two and a half hours - all about injections/sniffing and complicated legal forms. At least it gives me something else to worry about other than the General Anaesthetic!
