Post by mandyb »

hi guys
sorry for posting such an awful heading but i have got myself in a real state in my head......
had 2nd scan this wk , good heartbeat , good size etc... just under 9 wks , and they have signed me off, now waiting for appt with community midwife, but i guess i feel a bit alone now i am not with the ivf unit anymore and convinced myself that i am going to have a miscarriage.... i feel so ill informed. if the 8.5 wk scan was good what else could cause a miscarriage and what would the % chance be now ?? i feel so lucky to have got here that my luck is going to end..... is it the hormones?? anyone and advice/help??

Mandyb,

First of all, congratulations on being 'signed-off'... I saw your message in the 1st tri friends and posted there too. Can understand your worries, but if your beanie looked nice and strong on your 8.5 week scan then I think it's all systems go!

I have pretty much the same concerns as you, but I read up on the internet that most m/cs occur between weeks 5 and 8, as that's when all the serious organ development is happening. I think the odds are significantly less for a m/c for you now, and of course many natural conceptions aren't scanned til week 12, so that's when missed m/cs are picked up and might change the stats. Anyway, what I'm trying to say in a very clumsy way, is that I think you're over the worst and can relax a bit. Sorry I haven't got any stats... wish I'd bookmarked the site I read!

take care,

Congratulations first. I'm 5 wek PG and I still cant believe thet there is a little baby in my tummy. I can't wait that first US at 8.5 weeks to make sure everithing is OK. I agree with Caroline that 5-8 weeks is the worst when it comes to miscarriages. I read a lot about percentages and found that 25-30% end in miscarriage, but I think that they included chemical pregnancies. So I serched for some better results. And I found them on CDC site where they track sucess rates of fertility clinics. So national average for IVF patients is about 12% until the age of 36. That number looked much better to me and I believe their statistics.

Hi Mandy - congratulations on getting past your 8 week scan - that is the most nerveracking really because the chances of survival go up significantly after a successful 8 week scan. I know its a stressful time but try not to worry - you've got past the hardest part - I read somewhere that chances of survival are in the 90%s after a successful 8 week scan so try and relax and enjoy your pregnancy,

HI there
My ob told me that once they hear a normal heartbeat etc at 7 weeks, there is a well over 90% chance of "take home baby"
You are well over the biggest hurdle!
Although know how you feel -you should see my messages from when I was pregnant , especially just before scans!

Cor, what a bunch of worry heads we all are. I'm no better. Currently nearly 8 wks pregnant and have had 2 scans already. The first was only at about 5 wks so it was too early to see a fetal pole. Because I didn't see the baby I got myself into a right state with worry. Couldn't think straight. Went out and left the gas on! Had to pay for another scan before I went out of my crazy little mind.

Anyway, had a scan 2 days ago and saw the heartbeat so feel much happier. But still counting down the days until the next scan.

This is my 2nd pregnancy so you think I would be a bit more chilled but I think I'm worse. I think it's because of the lack of symptoms this time round.

If I won the lottery the first thing I would buy is an ultrasound machine! I think I would be using it constantly.

Anyway, we must try to stay relaxed ladies.
Happy knicker checking,

Barny

Hi All,

I am in the 9th week and still going crazy with worry! I guess becasue we have all been through so much and faced many hurdles its hard for us to believe that it is really happening and that we won't be faced with more bad news. I came across this OBGYN site that had some of the best information on miscarriages that I have found that might help us breath a little easier as time goes on. It seems that once you get over some growth hurdles you can really start to relax a bit (although I am guessing from this point worrying comes standard for Moms!)

""Table 1. Incidence of Pregnancy Failure in the First Trimester
%
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOTAL LOSS OF CONCEPTION 50-70
CLINICAL MISCARRIAGES (TOTAL) 15-25
< 6 weeks 18
6-9 weeks 4
> 9 weeks 3
EPF* In Primigravidas 6-10
Risk of EPF after 3 Miscarriages 25-30
Risk of EPF in 40-year-old Woman 30-40

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*EPF = early pregnancy failure

After ectopic pregnancy is excluded, the viability of an early pregnancy can be evaluated by measuring the gestational or chorionic sac size, the crown-rump length (CRL) of the embryo, and/or the fetal heart rate. The possibility of early pregnancy loss persists until the end of the embryonic period--ie, 70 days after the onset of the last menstrual period.3 Once a gestational sac has been documented on ultrasonographic scanning, subsequent loss of viability in the embryo will occur in 11.5% of pregnancies. After the embryo attains a CRL of 5 mm, the probability of subsequent loss falls to 7.2%. The loss rate drops rapidly thereafter to 3.3% for embryos with a CRL of 6 mm to 10 mm and to 0.5% for embryos with a CRL of 10 mm or more (ie, 5 weeks postovulation or 7 weeks after the last menstrual period). This is the point where early prenatal investigation can begin."
