Post by Macca8 »

Hi all,

I start my 3rd go at ICSI next week and I am highly considering acupuncture. Does anyone have any pro's and con's to it before I start.

Any advise most welcome,

Lisa,
My docs give acupuncture a big thumbs up. I am doing it simultaneously with this round. For medical doctors to be so positive about it, there must be something to it. At least that was my reasoning. My clinic is still in the middle of a study they are doing on it with their patients. Don't have the official results yet, but they are excited to put hard statistics to the acupuncture question (they've already told me they suspect it will be positive).
Hope that helps.

Randa,

Thanks for the information. I'm really hoping that it at least increases the amount of eggs I produce. I've got the phone number of one that covers IVF aswell and it's only 10 mins from my house so I am going to call the minute I get up on Monday.

Best of luck with your EC & ET.

Hi girls.
Not been on for a while, I tend to have a quick flick through every now and again. I am due to start my 5th ivf very soon and have a question about acupuncture.

I had my first acupuncture yesterday and it was great, I was dreading it as i hate needles etc. but it was really good. My question is -- for those of you who have done it, do you have to take all the disgusting supplements ? I have literally been sick this morning taking some tablets and the warm drink is a real struggle - I would be useless in i'm a celeb. get me out of here ! If you have to take them - any top tips? I had a glass of apple juice with my warm drink to take sips after each mouthful , it helped but it is still awful.

The things we do hey? I have told my DH that he has to try some!!!

Anyway, good luck girls, will be with you all shortly.

Oh, big one -- There is a prog. on tonight at 9 talking about alternative med. accupuncture etc.
bye for now Leanne x

Hi Leanne

Welcome back and good luck with your next cycle.

I'm also having acupuncture and I'm hoping that it will help me to be lucky this cycle. I've been having it since September.

My clinic gave me a warning against taking chinese herbs as they say you couldn't be sure of how they would interfere/react with the drugs. They had a woman last month whose cycle had to be cancelled as the chinese herbs she was taking interfered with the ivf drugs.

Thanks for reminding me about the programme, must remember to tape it now.

Take care & let us know how you get on.

Hi Leanne,

How was the acupuncture programme last night (the bit you saw) did it touch on IVF at all? I've taped it so will watch it when I'm off next week.

Hi girls - just a quick one...

I have just phoned my hospital to ask about the meds with acupuncture and she went mad!!! She has said whatever I do don't do acupuncture it is the only thing they have never had sucess with in their hospital. She says it is fantastic for most things but they have only ever had disaster with infertility treatment using acup. So just check with your hospitals before you pay £400 like I have just done --- ahhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!

Brighter note, I start my meds. beg. of Feb. so join you all soon xx

Hi Leanne - what a bizarre thing for your nurse to tell you - I would check with your consultant before you give up the idea of acupuncture. I agree that the supplements and drinks etc might be bad idea cos you don't know how they will react with the drugs but I'm pretty sure that there's never been any evidence of acupuncture effecting fertility treatment in a negative way - usually people fall into two camps - either you believe it helps or it is just a waste of money but I've never heard anyone say it can be damaging! My experience with acupuncture throughout treatment and pregnancy is very positive, infact I'm convinced that it was acupuncture that made a lot of the difference. Of course you have to have an acupuncturist who knows what they are doiing with treatment so get Zita West's London clinic to recommend someone - mine supported every step of treatment and knew excatly what she was doiing. Good luck with your treament - I really hope you get the outcome you wish for,

Leanne,

I agree with the others. I think you need to speak to your consultant. There definitely is no negative to it. My acupuncturist works with the IVF clinics in the North West and she doesn't prescribe any chinese herbs. I brought my multi vit to her so she could see that I was taking the right ones and she recommended more Vit C and Zinc for me but that's all.

Zita West is an infertility expert and also a leading acup and she recommends it to assist conception. The Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown's wife has just got pregnant again due to her 2nd run of acup. I think the nurse made a uneducated comment to you.

I hope everything works out well.

Leanne, welcome back great to see you back about the boards dear xxx

Good luck with ivf no 5 xx You can do it xxx

Cant understand why ur nurse went mad!!! I read only good things about it............Zita swears by it, so do many others.

Q: Does it really cost £400?????

Q: What about these chinese shops that offer herbs and acupuncture? Are they safe to go to or not??? there seems to be one in every town/city centre........

Hello,

I am on my 4th ivf and been having acupunture from one of those chinese shops (Dr China) in the mall, but no herbs.
I feel fine and relaxed and haven't had major symptos with the drugs, and no headaches at all from the synarel which was a big bonus.
The doctor is a female chinese.
However, I don't think it has helped me with the 'growing' of more follies as today I had my first scan after starting the Gonal F (on 375 ) and I have only 5 follies...So I am a bit of a slow responder :( But I am hoping it will help produce the 'top' egg. After all it only needs that little special egg to make it.
I bought 10 courses of acupunture for £280, so I thought may as well as it is such a small percentage to the almost £5000 it is costing this cycle.
I am hoping it will 'condition' /improve the blood flow to the uterus for the implantation.
My EC is around the 2nd Feb.
Good luck to everybody and God bless.
