1 IVF failure

Post by sjg1 »

:( Hi we have just been informed that our first course of IVF has not been successful and I wanted to see if anybody else had been in the same situation - It was all going very well we had 11 eggs and a normal sperm sample however we received a call yesterday informing us that none of the eggs had fertilised (Eggs and sperm had not mixed??).

I just wanted to get some insight into whether this has happened to anyone else, as we were told it was quite uncommon - any info would be gratefully appreciated as we are both still in shock!!

As an additional question will an investigation be carried out to determine why none of the eggs fertilised??

Many thanks

Hi

Sorry to hear of your news. Must be quite a shock. I'm sorry that I can't offer any answers, but I would advise that you might receive a better response of advice from those on the IVF thread if you could re-post.

Thinking of you at this difficult time

:) xx

Hi Sjg1

Im sorry about your unsuccessful 1st IVF. We had something similar happen, so I wanted to offer you some hope.
We had IVF because my DH was infertile due to chemotherapy treatment. Originally, they were going to do ICSI on all the eggs because they were using fresh sperm, but then decided because the samples were not good enough, to use his sperm frozen prior to chemo. Once thawed, we were informed they were really good - better than some donor samples and my eggs were good (I had 12 removed at EC) so did we want to try half IVF and half ICSI. We agreed and were shocked when none of the 6 IVF fertilised. Luckily with having half ICSI, we had 4 embryos. They couldnt give any explanation for no fertilisation with IVF. I have tried to find info on this since. Apparently sometimes there are no reasons.
Im not sure whether they will investigate further why none fertilised. We also wondered this, but never got to another consultation to discuss it because I got pregnant with one of the ICSI embryos!
I know you are probably just in shock at the moment, but it would be worth discussing ICSI at your next consultation. It does have a higher fertilisation rate than normal IVF anyway.
Anyway, good luck with any future treatments. Just because IVF didnt work doesnt mean a cycle of ICSI wouldnt. It brought us our beautiful baby girl.
Take care

I am really sorry to hear about your unsuccessful IVF attempt. My 1st IVF we got 9 eggs & 7 fertilised. Our 2nd IVF we got 4 eggs & none fertilised. There was no reason why, just unlucky. Our 3rd attempt we had ICSI & got 10 eggs & 6 fertilised. My advise is to keep going & don't give up. IVF can be unpredictable. You are not alone with this type of thing happening.

Take care

Hi there...
I had 11 eggs removed on egg retrieval day. They did ICSI on 10 of 11 and all 10 fertilized so we were really excited! On day 3 we received a call that the eggs were rapidly declining and theat we needed to come in immediately for transfer. Three embryos were transferred and two weeks later we learned that none had implanted. We have a meeting with our doc tomorrow to ask questions. I wonder if they even investigate why things don't work or whether they just go for the $. I have a long list of questions for the doctors such as why is it we got the least experienced and least educated of the embryologists? Was it just luck of the draw? Also, why was ultrasound not used during the transfer of the fertilized embryo? In all the books I have read it was listed as a must!

It is so disappointing to go through all this. My heart goes out to all of you who have experienced this.

Love,
Jennifer from TEXAS
