My wife had her 12 week scan at Kings in London last week, was not as good as we wanted. She is pregnant with twins and its good to see they really give the babies a serious checkover on the Ultra-Sound. All the Nuchal Fold fluids were good as were the nasal bones, so Twin A had a 1:8000 chance of Downs but Twin B was ok with the fluid and the nasal bone but they have now a new test which checks a condition in the heart called Tricuspid Regurgitation. Apparently 70% of babies with Downs have this condition and only 6% of babies with no abnormality have it. They originally put baby B's chances of 1:50. Wife refused to have CVS due to jepordising the pregnancy. Saw the Professor Nicolaides who said because the Nuchal Fold fluid was good and Nasal bone, he then re-adjusted the odds to 1:1800.
Two things worrying us now is that we still feel a risk of Downs and more worrying the baby has a heart condition. Kings say its just mild Tricuspid but nonetheless in my book its a heart problem.
What we want to ask is that has anyone else experienced this?
I had a nuchal scan that indicated baby didnt have downs, but could have a heart problem and was advised an amnio. I knew I couldnt have a baby that had serious problems but I also knew I couldnt have an amnio. I personally waited til the 20 week scan where everything can be seen better and downs can usually be spotted by the length of legs etc and then had a cardio scan at 24 weeks all were fine and my baby was born weighing a healthy 11 lb 1 oz with no probs at all.
I dont know if they suspected I had the same condition as you, but try not to worry I know its hard, but I think they tell us too much nowadays, and Prof Nicholaides is meant to be the best, so I'm sure you're in good hands.
Good luck
