New member looking for support, advice, and a giggle or two

Post by RozRozboboz »

Hi guys.

After trying to get pregnant for one and a half years, my husband and I have been diagnosed with unexplained fertility. So, we have decided to do IVF. At first it was daunting...this idea of doctors and tests and procedures and lots and lots and lots of money and uncertainty. But now, we have accepted all of that and are eager to go forward. I started my Buserelin two weeks ago. And yesterday I started my Puregon (aka Follistim here in the US). We are flying to Canada on Tuesday to start the monitoring process and expect to have the egg retrieval and replacement done during the week of March 13. As I am 36 years old, we are also going to have the fertilized eggs tested for genetic abnormalities. Gosh, that all sounds so ...cut and dried...so clinical.

So here is what is behind it. I am sooooo scared that it won't work. That something will go wrong..that we will have flown all the way to Canada only to have the cycle cancelled...that ... well, you get the idea.

And on a funny note...the night that my husband gave me the first injection of Buserelin, we were in a rush. It was already 8P. We had not eaten dinner. We had been rushing around for two days trying to organize IVF, a job change, a move, buying a house, and such. We finally made it back to our hotel room. I was absolutely famished and so was encouraging my husband to hurry. He, on the other hand, is an exceedingly careful guy who likes to take his time doing things. When he reads a manual, he reads it all the way through. He complied with my repeated requests to "hurry" and pulled out the Buserelin, the syringe, and all of the necessary accoutrements. After a lot of "oohs" and "aahs" on my part (of course this was before he had even gotten the needle near me), he stuck me and pushed the meds. Later we were congratulating ourselves and rehashing the whole scene when my husband drew in a breath. He took two really quick steps over to the bureau where the medicine was sitting and picked it up and looked at it with panic. He then looked over at me and said, "Are you OK? Do you feel alright?" He had such panic in his voice and on his face that I started to feel sick. He then said, "Oh my God. I injected like ten times too much into you!!!" I was like, "What are you talking about? How could that have happened? They told us..." That's when I started to feel faint. I was going down! Right before I was sure that I was going to pass out, I reached into the bag and looked at the other bottle of Buserelin that had yet to be opened. I looked back at the bottle that my husband was holding. In the background I heard him saying, "I don't know how this happened. Look at how much I injected..." That's when I realized that the bottle that he was holding was only half full. Of course, the bottle that I was holding--the new and unopened bottle--also looked about half full. Talk about perspective! After we calmed down and I stopped feeling sick (definitely psychosomatic) we went to dinner and had a good laugh (even though it was a shaky one) about how he had almost "killed" me. Little did we know that the worst that probably could have happened was that we would have to delay out IVF cycle.

OK, I have taken up enough of your time. Wish me luck, send me hugs and good thoughts, and respond if you get a chance. Thanks for "listening."

Hi Roz, there are plenty of people on here who appreciate a smile or two, and sometimes the things that happen during tmt have to be laughed at, not sure what the alternative is.

Over on the General Forum are lots of others starting tmt in March, look for a 'March buddy' thread title. There will be people chatting on there at all the stages of preparing/meds/scans/apts. during March as well as different types of tmt. You'll be in good company. There's a great abbreviations thread at the top too explaining all the jargon. There are also age threads if you click with that group, post there instead/as well. Entirely up to you.

Best of luck
Debra.
