Post Retrieval question

Post by kellyeatc »

Hello all, newbie here...

I just had my first IVF egg retrieval(following 2 unsuccessful IUI). I was fortunate enough to have 17 eggs retrieved, 12 fertilized and of those 12, 8 which are good. I am awaiting my 5 day transfer. My question is this: my embryologist said that I am to come in for an ultrasound on Friday because he saw some fluid on my retrieval scan. Fluid in my uterus. He said that they see it sometimes when many eggs are retrieved because the doctor is not able to full get all the fluid through the tube. I just wonder if anyone else has ever experienced this and if this is something that might delay my transfer.

Also, post retrieval cramping and tenderness of the abdomen..is that normal? no fever, no localized pain just a real tender belly..

Thanks much..

Post-retrieival pain

Post by SASA »

I had my egg retrieval a week ago. 10 eggs were retrieved.
The first 2 days after the retrieval was fine. I only felt a little pain in the area near the ovaries. I had 2 embryo put back on the 3rd day in the morning.
I started to feel abdomenal pain starting from that afternoon. The pain got more serious in the evening, my whole abdomen was painful. I had to hold my laugh and walk very slowly and could not take a deep breath to avoid the pain.
On the 4th day and the 5th day, my abdomen was so painful that I could only stay in bed. My body temperature was up a little bit. The pain subsided on the 6th day and body temperature also got back to normal.

I have consulted my dr. and I was told that the pain was normal. I was told that the pain and the rise in body temperature was caused by the possible accumulation of water in the abdomen after egg retrieval (my hormone level was too high).

Hope that help. Talk to your dr. about your discomfort.

Hello,
I had a large retrieval as well. I had 25 follies and 18 eggs. 15 were fertilized. I was in lots of discomfort in the very beginning. For goodness sakes, they punctured with a rather large needle 25 follies!! and to be honest, the pain never went away, just not as bad until evening. But I got a positive today on an hpt. Doc told me that the follies fill up with blood after they are retrieved and takes up to 2 weeks to go away and settle. So I am sitting her now in pain, and wondering if it is still implantation pain and still retrieval stuff. I am one day to my beta.
Goodluck.
