IVF Girls

Hi Girls,

As some of you know already my 2nd iui failed on Saturday. I have been told by the clinic I now need to have ivf. The reason why I'm sending this message is because I don't really know much about ivf. The main question I would like to ask is, when your eggs are been collected are u asleep or awake, if any of you have been awake does it hurt? I would be grateful for any other useful information on ivf.

Many Thanks
Pat
x

Hi Pat

There is so much to say about IVF! The answer to your question is it depends on your hospital. Mine put you to sleep, which is lovely apart from the fact when I come round from the anaesthetic I feel like I am drunk and make a total plonker of myself! Mind you the nurses are used to it.
Afterwards is a bit uncomfortable but not too bad - i find having my eyebrows plucked far worse! You can go home after a few hours.
Some of the others have had it under local anaesthetic which seems ok too.
Your hosp will explain everything and there is some useful stuff on this site which may be of help.

PAt sweetie

so sorry to read the news - chin up IVF - well you can have a choice re awake or asleep - mine don't really give a choice - I had gin and tonic flavour anaesthetic by a lush looking anaesthetist and whoah was out like a P**S Head!!!! - didn't feel a thing - some have a relaxer and jabber away like right plonkers but don't feel anything - depends on you and where you are - I would go out like a light if I was you - by that stage you are carrying eggs around that feel like canon ball and walk like you have had a marrow shoved up your backside (not that I have ever tried) - it's not as bad as you think and you will have days when you think - why me and wish you could just crawl away.... but we will all be here - good luck
Love
Tracey
xxxxxx

Dear Pat,

Sorry to hear about your failed IUI. It really depends on where you go as to whether you have general anaesthetic or heavy sedation - I've had both. I'd say that I prefer the general as I felt much better after it than the sedation.

Your tummy might feel a bit tender after the EC - after all, they do prod around a lot, but it's not too bad and a small price to pay.

I had some acupunture this time during the anasthetic and I didn't feel at all sleepy or sick after I'd woken up, so perhaps it helped.

Don't worry about it and ask lots of questions wherever you end up going.

Alison

Hi Pat

Sorry to hear about IUI, but I promise you IVF is really not as awful as you think its going to be! EC I had local anaesthetic. I was given Lorazapan the night before and on the morning of EC, so by the time I got to the hospital I just felt pissed and very giddy with excitement. I then had what the anaethetist described as three large bacardi breezers in my hand and whey hey didn't feel a thing. I think its worse for partners sat watching because they see and feel everything for you. You'll just be away with the fairies dreaming of babies.....I was! (Oh and I kept wittering on about when I could eat and how hungry I was - how embarrassing!!)

When you wake up you have a cup of tea and some toast and go home and rest. I promise you, having your bits waxed is 100 million times more painful!!! ET is a peace of piss too, if somewhat undignified! You pop your feet in the stirrups and get into some bizarre yoga position, 10 mins later its all done and you can go home. They told me there is no proof that lying down afterwards helps, so I got up and went home, next time, I'll lie on the bed for a bit!!

Welcome to the IVF gang - it will be fine. AND you have all of us to talk you through each bit!!

It will be fine.
love nikola.xx
