Feeling like crap :-(

Post by ka »

Hello all,

Basic intro: I joined this group yesterday and have been addicted to it - what a wonderful support group!!!!!

I am goign through my first IVF - had only one 9 cell embryo transferred (others didn't survive) - even this was not of good quality apparently. Was given 5-10% chance of success. Beta is on 20th (this Sunday).

I feel so sick now - I have been throwing up every morning after
breakfast (mostly acidic water) for the past few days but usually I
feel better by late morning. Today, apart from throwing up, I also feel
a bit dizzy and seem to have minor palpitations. I feel weak too which I
rarely do (am a bundle of energy most of the time).

And the most worrisome of the lot, I seem to have put on 5 lbs in just
2 days - DH thinks it is all water, but I have been peeing regularly.
I'm not uncomfortable otherwise - no major aches/pains other than the
normal once in a while shooting pains I get before AF's arrival... The
bloating hasn't gone away but hasn't increased either and I sort of
feel the symptoms of AF's arrival.

I'll monitor my weight and if it goes up like that, I'll see my
doctor.... I shouldn't get my AF while I'm doing Progesterone shots
right?

Any idea what could be going wrong (I know these are not pregnancy
symptoms - and I'm sure I'm not pregnant ...) - just wanted to pick
your brains before I call the doctor.

Thanks!
Kams

Hi Kams

I'm sorry you are feeling so awful. Please don't dismiss anything just yet. I was just the same the week before my test. I was being sick, headaches, dizzy, palpatations, tummy cramps. I also put on loads of weight, in fact I've scared myself as I've put on a stone and a half since the start of treatment - going on a healthy diet now before it's too late! As you can see I got a BFP!

Hang in there. If you are concerned then contact your clinic, you never know you may be coming down with something.

Let us know how you get on.

Your sickness could be from many different things...the medications you took, you could be pg, you could just be a bundle of nerves...etc. And the weight is normal...most of the people I've talked to that did IVF gained a good chunk of weight during the IVF cycle whether they got pg or not. So don't worry about the weight. Just eat healthy, drink lots of water and try to stay calm as you can until your test on Sunday.

You can get your period while taking the progesterone shots too. If your beta test shows you aren't pg, then your clinic will have you stop the shots. If you aren't pg, you might get AF before you test, in which case you should call the clinic but they will likely have you still do the shots until the beta test confirms you aren't pg (some people have bleeding even when they are pg).

So sorry you are feeling down as well as sick right now. IVF sure is a roller coaster ride, huh? Hang in there!

Hello ladies,

Looks like it is a mild case of OHSS - I'll drink lots of fliuds, monitor my weight and call the doctor if the symptoms worsen.

Thanks for all your kind words.

Kams, I hope it stays "mild" then and doesn't get worse for you. Keep us posted. And good luck for your test on Sunday!

Hi Kams,

Apparently pregnancy can cause OHSS to worsen or arrive in the first place. I was warned of this by my clinic as my E2 was 20,000 a day before EC and they said that my body may be tolerable up to that point but may worsen if a pregnancy is conceived. I certainly wouldn't rule pregnancy out yet. I think it's likely to be honest.

Ka,

My doctor gave me a handout for OHSS and in it says"It most commonly occurs when a pregnancy is established". So, we will all hope it does not get any worse but take the mild symptoms as a positive.

Those European E2 units always throw me off. To us Yanks,

20,000 pmol/L = 5500 pg/mL

You're absolutely right about pregnancy affecting OHSS. Early OHSS can result from the hCG injection, later OHSS can result from rising hCG due to pregnancy.

Thanks everyone...

While I wish this is due to pregnancy, I highly doubt it...

I called my doc's office and spoke to my RN - she did some diagnosis
over the phone. She thinks my estrogen levels are low for me to have
OHSS (they went down from 1170 to 800 post retrieval and that
apparently is good).

Also, my urine is clear, not coloured. But I was asked to measure my
girth right now, and measure it tomorrow early morning again. Check my
weight again tomorrow early morning. If there is any significant change
in either of them, I was asked to just drive over to the clinic
immediately.

Ah yes, I am supposed to drink at least 2-3 litres of water over the
next 12 hrs (this was since 10:00 AM this morning)

Will keep you updated and thanks a lot!!!!

Hi gals,

I'm much better - thanks for asking. My RN thinks it is not OHSS but a side-effect of the progesterone shots. I have lost 4 lbs in 2 days (I put on 5 in 2 days). I don't feel dizzy anymore. But my nausea has gotten much much worse. I cannot hold down anything solid at all - I throw up anything and everything I eat except saltine crackers. And I have a problem with heartburn too now.

I suspect it is a stomach bug - hopefully it'll go away soon.

In any case, after tomorrow's test, I can at least take some medicines for it depending on what the test says.

In my mind, it is already a BFN - I know I know - I should be more positive - but with just one poor quality embryo transferred, we don't have much chance anyway. Thankfully, we are already planning for our next IVF cycle!!

Will let you all know when I know about the beta tomorrow - thanks for all your support!
