As I explained in the introduction forum, I had a tubal ligation when I was a young girl for fear that I would pass along my bipolar disorder. I'm now thinking of having a baby and would like to have it myself. I have two questions, really:
Has anyone had an experience with going off psychotropic medications while getting pregnant and throughout the first trimester?
Rhonda--i had a tubal ligation after the birth of my son in 1997. I then had a tubal reversal in 2001--i had alot of scar tissue on my one tube adn they were unable to reconnect it but were able to reconnect my other side. We tried for almost 4 years and no success. We are currently in our 2 week waiting period having done our first ivf cycle.
As for the bipolar not sure--i would ask you mental health doc or an ob/gyn their opinion. My son is being treated for a mood disorder (possible bi polar).
I do wish you the best of luck though.

We were advised against a reversal, I think they took too much of my tubes away to be able to reconnect them anyway. We have just had our first attempt at IVF and as you can see we were very lucky and are now pregnant.
Sorry can't help you with regard to the psychotropic medication. I'd check with your mental health team.
Best of luck to you.

Ellie was born on 11 December 2006, 14 weeks early!
I am bi-polar and was on lamictal (anti-seizure medication). I had my tubes tied after having three children (all boys) because we thought we were done. In April DH and I decided we were idiots and I should never had tied the tubes. We opted to not even try to untie due to the fact that we really only did want one more, so after this pregnancy, we would wind up retying anyway. We opted for IVF and it worked. We are very lucky and happy to be pregnant with one baby.
s far as going off my meds, I do find that I have some trouble, but more with depression than mania. My problem was always the depression. I had that 95% of the time and the mania only 5% of the time. I find myself turning to food for comfort and I still continue counseling therapy.
We also think my middle son (12 years old) has bi-polar on top of being a little autistic (aspergers syndrome).
Hope this helps.
