PGD testing

Post by gmd »

Hey everyone,
I don't reply much but I do read the forums a lot. I was just wondering if anyone has had Pgd testing of if it was ever suggested by your doctors? My dh and I went in for our post IVF visit with our doctor because it had failed and he said that my cytoplasm around my eggs looked grainy and he said he thinks that is why we aren't getting pregnant. So he suggests having this genetic testing done to see which or if any eggs are defective for the next attempt. My insurance doesn't cover it and it is quite expensive. I was just wondering if it is worth it this time or should we wait? He is changing my meds. around to try to produce healthier eggs. I'm only 29 and only had 8 retrieved from last cycle. He said that someone my age should be producing more. Any suggestions or comments would help. Thanks. G

Yes we have done PGD and if you can afford it I highly recommend it. Only through PGD can you truly find out what is going on with your embryo's and they can actually get you information as to wheather it is more a male or female factor. I believe In the long run it can end up saving money. Your doctor may be transferring embryo's which are truly unusable back into you. Through PGD you will only be putting in truly good quality, genetically stable embryo's. We went through several IVF cycles prior to doing PGD and I would not do it any other way after we saw our results. We started out with 24 embryo's. Of the 24, only 7 were good. It saves a lot of frustration and heartbreak when you don't have to go through these cycles that probably would not have worked. Hope this gives you a little bit of information.

Thanks for your reply. We are still going back and forth with the idea. I'm not sure what we are going to do. We still have a few more weeks to decide. :) G

We actually did two cycles and then did the PGD on the embryo's. We figured we want several children so our doctor recommended doing two cycles getting as many eggs as we could and then unfreezing the first batch and doing PGD on all the eggs. That way we had more to work with and didn't have to pay for PGD twice. Our RE is very much on the cutting edge and I am not sure if all RE's would do this.

Beachgirl,

Are you in a cycle now? I will be doing a cycle in Dec with PGD and I was wondering how your results were.

If you dont mind sharing that would be great or I can PM you.

Thanks,
