Hi all!
Just wanted to pop in and just reiterate the comments re: group B strep for Sue!
Before I started IVF this was one of the routine "swabs" they did and they sent me a letter saying I was positive. It is very common for people to have GBS at some time in their lives (although they don't necc. have it all the time if you see what I mean!).
As long as they are aware of this, as you say they can give antibiotics iv and suggest this is done in early labour or when waters break (whichever is earlier!). At least 4 hours is reccommended.
it is important to make sure that the labour ward know, and it's on your notes. Make sure you discuss it also with the midwife - I've heard of some midwives/labour wards that don't agree with giving antibiotics at this time so refuse so best to be sure (although I hear this is rare).
For those of you who don't know about Group B Strep, it's worth getting the test done (England girls this may mean paying for it - about £35) as it is so simple to treat but can be fatal to a newborn if not.
The thing to remember is a) it is VERY common and b) It is very rare for anything to happen to the baby and c) it's very simple to treat. Forewarned is forearmed and all that!
There is a website called
www.gbss.org.uk which is very good!!!!!!
Hope this helps!!!!!
