1st ivf failed - follow up appointment

Post by Yvee »

Hi there,

After going through our 1st ivf, which failed at the beginning of August, i have now been told today that our follow up appointment will be 17 weeks away (after being told it would only be 6 weeks). Is this a normal length of time to wait, or should we complain? I am feeling totally abandoned by the clinic, have have questions to ask, and answers to get. Would love to hear your thoughts. I FEEL LIKE SCREAMING, I'M SO ANGRY.

thanks

So sorry to hear. Yvee. How frustrating!

17 weeks seems like an awfully long time to me. After my m/c, my follow-up appointment was in about 3 weeks and my follow-up after this bfn was just over 2 weeks. I don't know what is 'average' but I'd think anywhere from 2-4 weeks would seem reasonable.

Perhaps consider looking at other clinics?

Best of luck to you.

Yvee, im so sorry your cycle failed that time, and yeah thats way too long to wait for a follow up the first time we waited two weeks our second we waited three days... my dr always says if we are told it will be longer to ask to talk to his secretary and she will squeeze us in sooner can you try this ? i know i would.

wishing you luck Debz

thank you both for replying, i didn't think it was a reasonable time to wait, but i thought i would get honest answers from people on this board. I think i will have to formally complain to the clinic, and see if that gets a response. I can't wait that long, as i will go mad by then.

Hi Yvee
I'm in Aberdeen and have my follow-up appointment in 2 weeks time - had failed IVF attempt in early July so thats about a 2 month wait. The Aberdeen Assisted Unit is closing from October to February for a major refit so there is apparently a huge backlog of people as they're trying to get everyone seen before it closes.
Where are you?

I have been reading about the unit closing in Aberdeen. I've been going to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. Why do the clinics make you wait so long for a follow up appointment, do they not realise how we might be feeling. I have put in a letter of complaint, so i will await the reply - i'm not one for complaining but i really feel angry and let down by them. What will you do when the unit closes? Good luck with appointment

Hi Yvee and Nictor
Thats great news about the Aberdeen IVF Clinic not closing til January - might be able to fit in an extra lot (or 2) before it closes.
We are getting 3 free "goes" on the NHS so we cant really complain about the time it is taking for us to be seen.
Feel free to add me to MSN if you have it - juliejoobjoob@hotmail.com
I'd love to chat to local people about our experiences.

It's nice to hear from a local person, I've taken your MSN address and will send you a message. Thats great you are getting 3 shots on the NHS, i am too but have to go to the back of the queue after a failed attempt, so it means another 2 years on the waiting list. Looks like we will be finding the money ourselves from somewhere.

Take care

Hi Ladies,

Do u mind if i butt in! Im curious as to how you got 3 free goes on the NHS?? I dont begrudge anyone, and i really hope u get a BBFP from it, no woman should have to go thru what we are all going thru at the moment.

I live in Northern Ireland and had to pay for my treatment. I am 38 and already have 2 children by my ex husband! I know they dont give free goes to women who have already got kids, but my husband has none - i did try and ask for half price lol, but that didnt work!

NHS funding in our area is a no no anyway - weather i had kids or not, i just dont think its fair that our postcodes make a difference as to who gets what, when and how many?
Also i think it is way too expensive, we paid all in all in the region of £4,800 thats with all consoltations, drugs and follow ups. For something thats as common as it seems to be - i think the goverment should re-assess the pricing, if we were to pay 3 times that would be around £14,000 all in all - the goverment and the private sector seem to be punishing women like me!
Sorry - i dont usually do politics, but i get angry that some places get free and some dont!

P.S - If i was living in ur area, i'd be first on the list (If theyd have me lol) so dont think im having a go at u ladies, cos im not, bloody goverment im having a go at!

Good Luck for ur BFP's :D

Hi Welshgirl
In our area you get free IVF if you are under 38 and neither partner has any children so I'm afraid that would rule you out in our area too.
It is a lot of money but I take the attitude that its only the price of a holiday and I know what I'd rather have!
We're quite prepared to pay but the doctor advised us to wait and if the three free ones don't work then to go ahead and pay.
But to be honest, I'd rather that the money that is being spent on us having kids was used to treat seriously ill patients - as okay our situation isn't good but how would you feel if you were being refused cancer treatment just because they had no money to buy your drugs.

Hi ladies,

Your not going to beleive this .... news here this morning on the radio saying that IVF treatment law is being changed here in Northern ireland - they are now going to raise the age limit to over 40 (its 38 here at the moment)

AND ..... heres the best bit -

That women who already have children (IE = ME lol) are able to have ONE free treatment (usually its two or threee for childless couples) I cant beleive it - im sooooooo chuffed - :D :D

I printed it off, and am making an appointment with my doctor as i type lol, wish me luck :D
