Ghost...Follow Up on 46 Eggs retreived

Post by bonniedoo »

Ghost, Why are you not surprised about a fresh cycle not working with 46 eggs retrieved? Do you think it is a bad sign that we have no embryos to freeze? On the day of the transfer they said they were looking at 9 embryos still. I guess none of them made it. The day after the transfer 39 fertilized.

I also want to let you know that I did get pregnant once naturally in 2004 and miscarried after 8 weeks. Tried for a year naturally with no success and then went for infertility treatment.

Thanks. Just searching for answers!

Two factors were working against you. The one everybody talks about, embryo quality, was not in your favor. The rapid failure of 43 oocytes/embryos did not bode well for the remaining three. The other factor, the one few talk about, is endometrial receptivity, which is frequently compromised in cycles with many follicles, and you must have had around 50 or more follicles in order to get 46 oocytes.

Most IVF cycles fail, and yours was probably compromised anyway, but few with so many eggs have so few viable for transfer/freezing. That's why I am more curious about that aspect.

Were you coasted? Triggered early? Given a Lupron "trigger" or perhaps a reduced dose of hCG? Most clinics get nervous with patients with 50 follicles, because of the risk of OHSS. They might compromise the stimulation and therefore the oocytes.

Ghost,
Toward the end they dropped me to 75mg of Follistim for one night. The entire cycle I was doing Follistim AM and PM (150mg) I continued to do Lupron-5 units and low dose HSG-30 units. Two days before the retrieval I did 2 shots of Ovudrel.

Thanks so much for your help!

Bonniedoo- Hi just thought I'd pass on what my RE told me when I failed my 2nd IVF. Because I produced 26 follicles (had 6 to freeze) He felt my body responded "too well to the meds" meaning overstimulated. He said Re's look to find a range of 10-16 follicles. This is more a successful outcome. My next round he plans to not stim me as much so hopefully the odds are more in my favor.

Now that I said that I am on another chat forum and a woman who had 43 follicles just got a BFP on her 1st try with IVF and she is in her late 30's so go figure!!!!

Rule of thumb I guess is the odds are greater when we have the range of 10-16. You could still get a BFP with more follicles but chances are against you rather than for you - Good luck lot's of baby dust to us both!

Hello! I actually had a similar issue in my first round of IVF (but not as drastic). They retrieved 17 eggs and only one fertilized to 8-cell but did not give me a BFP. This time they only got 4 eggs and 3 of them made it all the way! Still in 2ww. Personally, common sense tells me that my body had to work harder to produce the 17, so they weren't of the best quality. These 3 were perfect. It broke my heart because I assumed having 17 was a good thing. I'm happier with 4!

Thanks for your input regarding my situation. I meet with my RE on Weds and have had several conversations with my nurse. They are coming up with a new plan for me. For now I am enjoying this little break. I am back at the gym and enjoying real coffee in the morning. Hang in there with the 2ww. I know how stressful it is. Sincerely, Christine (Bonniedoo) :D

Bonniedoo- My next try for IVF isn't until January so "Starbucks" has been seeing me almost every other day  I don't drink coffee but I'm addicted to Chai tea latte's. I'm also working out more so I too am enjoying (in a way) the free time so to speak. Don't get me wrong can't wait for January but a good hot cocoa and hot tea at night especially when it's 58 degrees here is soooo soothing!!

Luvbabies, I know what you mean about “kind of” enjoying working out and the caffeinated drinks. When I attended the first class at the gym I was tearful because I was back at the same spot but at the same time I was happy to have some normalcy in my life. Being on this break also makes me realize how difficult and tiresome it is to be doing an IVF cycle. It is very scary to think about starting a new cycle and getting to that 2ww. I guess it is important to take one day at a time and try to enjoy life and your relationship. I meet with my RE on Weds and tomorrow morning I am going for blood work to start the pill…not fun. I don’t like the pill!! I get very moody! Anyway, try to hang in there and enjoy the next couple months. Christine
