Julie & Bella...very funny stories! I can just imagine how that happened because I've done similar things with both the food & the dummies. I'm sure it made for a good laugh that day, huh?

Well, Brady is back to getting up several times in the night and crying. I'm doing more "giving up" than trying to teach him to go back to sleep on his own by crying. I'm going to hope this is a just a phase and for the time being I need to help him get through it.

Julie, I boiled my sweet potatoes once and steamed them once. I also considered baking them. Probably any of those work well (although I won't boil them again).

Well, I need to try to do a zillion things before nap time ends, so bye for now! Hope you are all having a fun day.

I'm sorry - I know I shouldn't laugh but Julie that made me howl!!!! Don't know about you but when littlun is asleep there is an air of calm in the house. It's clean, tidy - the washings on. Dinner preparing nicely. Emails checked and answered. Ironing finished and cats fed. Then within 30 seconds of him waking up it looks like a battlefield in the house! And I find 30 different chores that I really should have done but didn't!!!!!!!
When we did our last batch of cooking, dp and I ran around like loonatics knowing Charlie would only sleep for 30 minutes and we wanted to get as much done when he was asleep. I peeled, he chopped! We had 3 veg in the steamer - 2 on to boil and one in the microwave steamer!!!! The ice cube trays were ready - bags ready labelled and the mouli and blender waiting to go. It was like a military operation!!!!!!

Sorry can't stop but will try and pop in again later!

Oh - but re: sweet potato - I steamed it but baking is just as good, if not better!!! Does anyone know if brussell sprouts are a no-no? The Annabel Karmel book mentions every fruit and veg under the sun, but for some reason there is no mention at all of brussells? And I'm one of those weird people who love them!!!!!!!

It sounds like we all have the nap time panic. My house looks like a bomb hit it! I try to keep all of Isabella's things in one place but somehow throughout the day they are strewn all over the place. What will it be when they can walk! In Munich, Isabella does not have her own room so she sleeps in the study/TV room..good for me because then I don't veg out in front of the TV. In Vienna she has her own room which really helps keep the sanity - for both of us! She is doing better eating - I bought the Annabel book - wow that is great! Thank you for recommending it! I can't believe she is 5 months today.

Still very active rolling over and trying to grab a specific toy...BUT we aren't doing very good sitting up. She slouches over. I bought the bumbo chair and she just falls forward in it. I am thinking because she is long and skinny and doesn't have 'baby speck' it may take longer. How are you all doing sitting??? I read that by 5 months they should be able to sit for short periods without assistance..well we do about 5 seconds and then tumble over..about where we were 2 months ago. Any suggestions??

Tracii, my boys are 6 1/2 months old and we just tried "teaching" them to sit up last night for fun. They lasted a few seconds and tumbled over. One of them still stiffens up and tries to stand instead of sit too.

Yep, nap time panic for me too. So much to try to accomplish and of course never a long enough nap to get it all done!

Hi Tracii -
We didn't even try sitting until about 5 months. We waited until he was rolling over before working on sitting. The first week or so was about as you had described it. Then we he figured out to use his arms for propping himself up that helped. He could then sit for 10-15 seconds at a time. After that, within 2 weeks he got really good at sitting on his own. I think he likes it so he works really hard at it. He can go for several minutes on his own now, but I don't leave him unless I prop pillows all the way around for him to tipover onto. Even then, I don't really walk away, I just keep myself busy doing other stuff near him like folding laundry. I'm too afraid that he'll tip into the pillows and suffocate. He is now at the point that if he bends way forward to grab a toy, he can straighten himself back up. What helped the most was to be in front of him with a toy at or above eye level to discourage tipping forward. That way he worked on his balance. Also, I tried to hold his hips/legs instead of holding him around the waist/chest. I think it forced him to strengthen his core muscles quickly. I was really surprised at how quickly he got good at this, as I didn't think he would EVER roll over and thought sitting would be even harder. But, it has gone easily.

KristiA - we also use an exersaucer and he loves being in it. He has even figured out that he has to push the "cow" button 4 times to get it to play "old mcdonald" He completely ignores all the other animals when pushing the buttons and then starts laughing when it starts to play "his song"

Anyone else have a piano? I don't know how to play, but we love to sit at it and H just bangs away on the keys. He gets soooo excited. It is a really good distraction when he starts getting bored with his toys.

Hope you are all well!

Hi all!

Sorry not got much time, but just thought I'd update our news. Not great I'm afraid! Charlie has chickenpox!
Par for the course I'm told - It's rife in our area at the moment. Not too bad so far - bit grizzly but not as bad as I thought. He has quite a few spots, but not as many as he could - unfortunately 2 on his bum and one on his bits poor thing! Went out and got the calamine lotion - god I HATE that smell - reminds me of when I had chickenpox!
Anyway people keep telling me it's good he's got it so young. Not so many problems with scratching and scarring! So let's just see how it goes!

Will promise to update you when I can!

Cla - Hang in there the next couple of days..chicken pox! Yes on one side it is good that Charlie got them so early. I can still remember when I had them at 7 years old..they were everywhere! Where do you think Charlie picked them up?

Kristi and Julie - Thank you for the words of advice on sitting. I somtimes need to remember that Isabella will develop in her own time and things will come to her...poor thing has a Type A for a mother..hopefully she didn't inherit this! Julie - I wish we had a piano - this is DHs dream is to own a baby grand..someday when we move to Italy..we already have the music room in our drawings. Isabella has really long fingers so hopefully she can learn someday. Kristi - how is it going at nighttime?

It is 7am and the little one is still sound asleep! I just checked on her (I always check to make sure she is ok!)...she didn't have many naps yesterday..in fact only 1! Sunday she had no naps and I thought I was going to go crazy but everytime I put her down she screamed..not cried but screamed. Is anyone having more troubles trying to put diapers on or change clothes? Isabella won't sit still...and it takes me atleast 5 minutes to get a diaper on  What will it be like at 2! I think I will be a size 0 with lots of grey hair! Also, we are flying to the US in September..has anyone been on the plane yet? Any tricks to keep them from screaming during take off and landing...we are flying at the front of the plane (DHs miles :D )...and I don't want everyone to hate me because my child is screaming..and she is a screamer

Off for another cup of tea before Ms. Tumbleweed wakes up!

Hi all,

It has been so long since i logged in and so much is going on with you all! Where to start?

Tracii - we took Arabella to  OZ when she was 9wks old. I found that feeding her (milk) at take-off and landing prevented any crying. I think they only cry because of their ears. It sounds like Isabella sleeps in the car so you could get lucky nad the drone of the engines will keep her sleepy!

I hope Charlie's chickenpox clears up soon Cla. I hope we don't get the outbreaak down here but you never know.

I am counting my blessings that we have had no sleep issues with Arabella, i really feel for you all. I love my sleep and would be a zombie.

We have just come back form Ireland (cousin's wedding) so i have not made much progress on the new food introduction but had a real problem getting her to eat babyfood from jars. She hated it so have made a bit of a rod for my own back homecooking but then i can control what she eats. I don't like processed food for me so felt very guilty making her eat it whilst we were away. Also got the guilts as i was using disposable nappies but cloth would have been a nightmare and i logistically impossible in hotels!

I loved your cooking stories  It is so easy to get distracted. Does anyone else feel like they are doing 20 things a t once and none of them well? I find myself cleaning, cooking, entertainign her and sorting hte post all att he same time :?

I have already had AF appear once, 2 days after stopping BFing. I had hoped it owuld stay away longer but hey ho. My body seems to have bounced back fairly well, still carrying baby weight but my poor boobs will never be the same again. All perkiness has left the building, does anyone have any tips on how to rectify the situation?

Arabella is trying to sit but still falls over after 10 secs or so. I will try your ideas Julie as they make so much sense. Duh! i think my brain has gone ot mush.

better go Arabella is stirring from her slumber and we really need food so have to do a supermarket run!

Love Saraid

Poor Charlie!! Cla, I hope his chickenpox clears up quick and doesn't get any worse!

Tracii, it's still the same at night...but I'm giving in and letting them sleep with me instead of putting them back in their cribs over and over and letting them cry, etc. Not sure if that's the right thing to do, but it got to be too much battling with them all night long.

We flew on a plan at 3 months and we are flying again next week. A 3 months they just slept and we fed them on the way up & down so it would unplug their ears. I'm worried about flying next week because I doubt they will sleep!

Tracii, my boys also hate getting their diapers & clothes changed. They much prefer naked time.

Julie, we have the same exersaucer! Baby Einstein, right? We have a piano, but I haven't even played it with the boys yet! Good idea for another activity to keep them occupied!

Saraied, good to hear from you! You mean our boobs won't stay this big and perky and full after we stop BFing?????? Darn!! :)

Hi all!

Another ok day - bit grizzly but again, could be worse. I don't think the itching stage has happened yet and that's the bit I'm dreading! Have doused him in calamine - he looks so funny!

Tracii - I agree about the feeding during take off and landing - that was the advse we were given. He actually had a cold when we flew so we gave him a medicine called Medised before we took off as it's a decongenstant. Although he slept through both take-offs! Then during landing we fed him - not only does it distract them but the sucking and swallowing helps their ears. Luckily no probs there.

I used to play the piano (not very well I may add!) and would love to have one as well. There is one inmy local pub that Charlie's bashed a few times! and he has a few toys with keyboards - he loves the noises they make!

Haven't heard of the exersaucer?! But Baby Einstein lullaby cd has been my saviour some sleeptimes! He loves his music!!!!

Speak soon!

Oh Bella - Life is all different now! You can't stop them. Ok so I was paranoid Isabella wouldn't sit up...well she is now pushing herself and pulling herself up! Today she pushed herself out of the bumbo chair! I need to keep an eye on her 100%. Yesterday I left her room for literally 5 seconds and she rolled underneath her crib. today she had no nap..I am exhausted and need a glass of wine...she is now in bed at 7pm! Just keep a keen eye on Lucy when changing...they really master the roll and they get much more confident with their movements i.e. - they are unstoppable.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. The weather in Vienna is fantastic so we are doing some garden work and have a nice Sunday going out to late lunch planned.

Tracii - you said it all! You need eyes in the back of your head! Goodness knows what will happen when they can walk!
I'm amazed how quickly they can do things. One day Charlie was very wobbly nd then BANG - he can sit up no probs on his own. A few days ago he couldn't move in his walker and now he's whizzing around! It's frightening!

Have a great weekend all!

I just had the scare of my life...and yes we do need eyes at the back of our heads! I went to make Isabella dinner - she was in the kitchen with me in her little 'rocking'chair..the strap was not on very tight and she flipped out..I swear I just turned my back for one second and BOOM she hit her forhead on the floor and screamed for about 30 minutes. I of course called th doctor and he said if she throws up or gets a fever to call asap. Luckily she fell on her forhead because he said it is the hardest area of the skull. She has some redness where she hit the floor. I will be up all night checking on her. I feel so bad and like a terrible mother..I know I should have had her strapped in tighter. So please - take it from a lesson learned - keep the little ones strapped in at all times.
