Endometriosis and failed IVF...please help if you can

Post by rockrat71 »

Has anyone with severe endo had success with IVF? I just failed my first IVF and am miserable. I was a so-so responder, got 5 eggs, 4 fert, 3 embryos that were not that great (8-cell, grade 2; 5-cell, grade 3; 4-cell, grade 4). Grade 1 is best at my clinic. All my pre-IVF tests came back normal, my uterine lining was triple stripe and perfect (so they said). I do have a 2.5cm endometrioma on both ovaries.

I'm desperately seeking success stories. I wonder what role endo played, if any, in my failure. Why were my embryos so lousy when my eggs and DH's sperm were okay...? I want to jump right in and do this again but is there any hope? My post IVF consult isn't until next Thursday. My list of questions for RE is so long!

Thanks for any help!!!

Hi rockrat
I don't have endo, but I wanted to say how sorry I am for your failed IVF. I too, just went thru a failed IVF cycle this past May. I have had 3 early m/c's and a chemical pg. Then we tried IVF to do PGD, which we wound up cancelling the PGD b/c we only had 4 embies that were 2 cell on Day 2. 9 egss retrieved, 7 fertilized, 3 had 3 pronuclei (abnormal) and 4 fert. We transferred 2 really good quality embies on Day 3 (1-7 cell Grade 2 and 1 5-cell Grade 1 (excellent), BFN. :( I am 36 and will be 37 in August, only weeks away, DH is 34 and has excellent sperm quality, no issues there.

At this point, we (DH and I, as well as my RE) feel that I have an egg quality issue, so we are moving on to DE (Donor Egg). I'm sorry I couldn't help you with the endo question and what to do next but typically REs will give you another protocol, one that may be more aggressive than the first.

Praying you get a BFP!
Cathy
GOOD LUCK!

Hello,

I had to come in and tell u of a young lady that i cycled with. Her name on here is Ems1971.
She is now pregnant (around 24 weeks) with her 2nd go at IVF. Her first go only got 2 eggs, which both fertalized at a normal rate, but she got a BFN. her 2nd go she got 3 eggs, 2 fertalized but at a slow rate and not good quality. She was devastated and thought it was a no go - but lo and behold she got pregnant :D
She also had severe endo, and has many op's to clear it etc. please dont give up hope because of ur endo - if it was getting in the way, the DR's would tell u and operate before they did the IVF. I too have endo, but not on my ovaries, i also got a BFN first time around but am ready to roll again and will be starting next mth.
I wish u well, and please please dont give up hope - if u go to the pregnant after treatment and look for Ems, she too will tell u the same thing.

Good Luck

Becky Xxx

Hi there
I have endo quite severely. I have it all over my ovaries (the right one being more severe), in my pelvic area, on my bowel and they think in the muscles of the uterus (unconfirmed). It was undiagnosed for years and i was in so much pain, the doctors out it down to bad PMT! I have had 4 operations to try and remove it but it still contiunes to grow back. I have a child, conceived naturally 16 years ago, and i managed to get pregnant a second time 10 years ago (previous partner), however i had a m/c at 3 months. Unfortunatley my current DH has the problem (blocked tubes) and so we cant concieve naturally. This is our first time on ICSI and i had very high hopes of becoming pregnant. I tested today and it was positive. I am bleeding quite heavily though and got loads of pain. But the main thing is that i did get pregnant (twice before) even though i have this condition. You will to and just because it hasnt happened first time, you need to keep positive (easier said than done i know). All your tests sound really good and you did respond to treatment. Good luck for your next go, im sure it will happen soon. Thinking of you. X

Melanie- Just wanted to say keep your head up.
I had SEVERE endo, diagnosed 5 maybe 6 years ago. By the time it got diagnosed I had lost an ovary and a tube. We then discovered that I had endo on my diaphram, bowels, appendix, ovaries...everywhere. The doctor told me when he opened me up it looked like someone had poured a bottle of super glue all over my insides. THough he had been practicing for several years, and was world renowned (sp) he said he had never seen a case as severe as mine. He told me after the surgery I should be pregnant within 6 months. Didn't work
So, I sought another doctor who found that in my one remaining tube I had poison that would prevent me from getting pregnant. He said we needed to remove that tube and do IVF. I was devistated. I didn't understand why God would punish me so. After a lot of thought and prayers, we decided to go down the IVF route. WEll, we ended up pregnant after the first round. YIPPEE!!!
Two years later we wanted to try again, but were told that I had polyps and those had to be removed before starting anything. Well, it didn't fit out time frame, so we put it all off for another year.
This past year I had the polyps removed. HOwever, we were devistated at my initial appointment to learn that the endo had returned and was in full force. However, we decided to conitnue and see where it took us. I responded to the stimms really, really well. THerefore, they said the endo was not a factor in anything. Unfortunately, again we had to get the terrible news on the day of transfer that a polyp had formed on the cervical opening. THey were able to transfer my eggs, but I knew within 4 hours that it didn't take. And unfortuantely, I ended up with a BFN
HOwever, I just got off the phone with the doctor. He said that the endo was not a factor, and he just thinks that once we remove this polyp things will be wonderful.
I did think it was interesting that he said not to operate on the endo. With every operation you form scar tissue, and it affects your body. Therefore, he said if I can endure the pain he wants us to just go ahead and do a FET next summer.
Sorry to make the post long. However, I just wanted to let you know that I did become pregnant with endo, though it may not have been active at the time that I did it.
Please let me know how your post appointment goes with your doctor. I will be interested in hearing what he has to say.

Melanie,

I to have endo. Was diagnosed when I was 20. Had surgery at age 21. Was married at age 19, so we found out about the endo after getting married and starting to try for children. It has been a hard 3+ years of pain, discomfort and trying. We were finally were told that IVF was are only options at this time. We had retrival on July 18 and transfer on July 21. Our first HCG blood test is this friday. I can only hope and pray for the best, but prepare myself for the worst. I can only wish the best of luck to you. Keep you head up and think positive thoughts. Try to think of the good things. Lots of love and luck your way.

Kristen,

You have been through so much already. I will say prayers for you for your BFP!! How do you feel about the results of your egg retrieval and embryo quality? Did you have any embies to freeze?

Prayers, luck and babydust to you.

Cathy,

Thanks for the prayers. We need all we can get. I felt okay about the retrieval and embryo. I was told that they would probably only get 3 good ones out. They ended up getting 7. Out of those 7, 4 were mature enough and out of those 4, 3 took fertilization. So we put two back and we were able to freeze the one. I guess that is not to bad. It could have been worse. They said that I didn't have that much embryos because of my endometriosis. I have to keep thinking positive and that it only takes one to take.

I have deep adenomyosis and will begin my IVF treatment in December. I'm scared and it helps me to see that there are more women in my situation with whom I can share my experience.
