Shock!

Post by Kelley77 »

Hello ladies.... I read much more than I post, however I thought I would share an update, and for those that need a little boost.....

Quick background: Male Factor (low count, motility etc..) nothing believed to be on my side (we did have a baby naturally 4 years, we have a little boy)... I responded well (supposedly) to the Follistom (was only on 75ml 2x/day) Retrieved 17 eggs, 5 fertilized and only 2 made it. (From this, the Dr. believes that I may have an issue too....) Both that did make it were not the best grades at all, On day 3 transfer 1) 6 cell grade B (no fragments & should have been 8 cells by then) 2) 8 cell grade C moderate fragmentation. Embryologist did defragment, but he said it comes back.... RE said he wanted to be honest with me, and that we could really only hope the 6 cell would implant and continue to divide, but that my chances are fairly low....and really no chance with the C grade. (Assisted Hatching was also used)

I was devastated...I was CERTAIN CERTAIN CERTAIN neither would take....

Well I ended up getting OHSS moderatly around 6 days after transfer. I received my first HCG level of 56 - I was pregnant! This was 10dp3dt. Then 8 days later, my second HCG came back at 469..so I was still pregnant, and everything looked pretty good. Obviously, I knew only one had taken, as my levels indicated that of a singleton.

I went in for my first U/S at 6 weeks 5 days, and you could only imagine my SHOCK when there were two sacks, two yoks and yes...two heartbeats. Unfortunately, I do have a very small subchorionic hemorage, however the babies looked good. One measured right on at 6 weeks 5 days, the other was 6 weeks 2 days. We could not hear the heartbeats, which I was disappointed about...I suppose it is still a little early. Next week I go back for my 7 week U/S, and they do expect to hear both heartbeats......I am praying each & every day that nothing happens to either baby....

Dr. said I would be a good surrogate :) He was amazed with what he saw, and no..one embryo did not split..they were in two separate sacs, meaning both implanted.

I do have a couple of questions....
1) Is it a huge problem that one baby is a couple of days behind? I am thinking this is the baby that started out with 6 cells?
2) What can my low (low in comparison to twins) HCG be chalked up to?
3) Anyone familiar with a subchorionic hemorage...mine was about 7mm. Hoping it doesn't get any bigger..I have read, and as of right now, don't believe this will cause miscarriag at this point.....
4) Should I have been able to hear the heatbeats?

My recent numbers are: (at 6 weeks 5 days)
Estrogen - 4000 (they had me stop doing the patch since it was a little high)
Prog - 140
HCG 24,000

To the ladies that were in the Aug/Sept buddies, I have been keeping up with each of you, and glad to see everyone is doing well....

Thanks for reading!!

Kelley,

My doc once said that when 2 are implanted, one often boosts the other. Sort of like it supports it? I don't know the reasoning behind this is or the science ...
Do you want see the man in charge or the women who knows what's going on?

Kelly...

Your babies' growth is just fine, your HCG numbers are excellent and since you saw two HBs I would say you are more than well on your way to having TWO healthy babies in 8 months!!! (esp given all the factors put together)! Congratulations!!!!

Just last week (at 10w 5d) I was told one baby was 10w 3d but then 2 days later on Wed at the Nuchal Fold Translucency test at EXACTLY 11w (you'll get this test too between 11 and 13 weeks - it checks the fold in the babies' necks to determine the possibility of Downs along with one other genetic disorder) the sonographer said that the babies were meauring 11w 5d and 11w 4d so.... you can't go by just ONE U/S. It also depends on who is reading it and what levels the machine is set to. I am assuming that this very high resolution U/S at this test is much more accurate than the one at the RE office since REs don't follow pregnancies past 10 to 12 weeks.

So welcome to the twins "club". What's your due date?

Take care xxx

Hello,
Thank you! You just made my day! I have been so upset over my transfer yesterday... 3 transferred- two 5's and a 6. I was thinking the worst, but trying to stay positive. We have had 4 cycles (including this one) and one pregnancy (as of yet). I have usually had 7's and 8 cells and negative results. I am glad to read your post!!!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.....Cocoa, it is nice to hear such support from someone who is right in the same race! With the single baby my due date was May 30th, so I guess a couple of weeks earlier?

Hope1028....I am generally a 'realistic' person (so..everyone else calls me negative) as I was with this...and still am....(so nervous something is going to happen still....) but I hope that you stay positive, and that everything works out for the best. I never really believed people when they said that inside of you is the best environment...and I was very upset that I couldn't grow my embryo's to blast's...but maybe.....just maybe everyone was right!!

We shall see, and I will keep everyone posted..... Good Luck ladies!

Kelley~
We are in the same exact boat. My first HCG was 62 and then only 264. I was pg but had pretty low numbers and was thinking it was just one. Now I have happy healthy 6 week old twins! Those numbers are simply that. . . numbers! AS long as you are pg, WHOOOOHOOOO! Congrats to you! Also, my twins were rarely ever measuring the same age. Right up to the end. That's all very normal. Mine were almost a week apart in the beginning so don't worry.

Come join the Double Trouble thread now that you have twins to celebrate! It's the best thing in the whole world! Nothing could be more amazing that looking down at two little miracle babies! Congrats to you and DH!!!!!

Take care~

Kelly, first of all, congrats on your pg!!!!!!!, that is such a great story!!!!. I am on my 2ww right now. I transferred 3 quite good embryos on day 3. This is my 4th try at IVF, I am really hoping for success, but I am soooo worried!!!. I have a question for you, when you said that on day 6 you started having mild OHSS what did you mean?, what symptoms did you experience?.......any info will be valuable for this crazy 2ww'er!!!!!

Vicky..... around day 6, I realized that I was starting to get very bloated..I could barely gett my pants on (I thought that OHSS came right after egg retrieval) I started to have a general ill feeling..not throwing up, or fever or something like that....just generally ill (bb's hurt terribly..chalked that up to poi shots) , but mainly the bloating (oh, also I had much difficulty taking in deep breaths)...I couldn't believe how big my stomach was getting, however I did not have much weight gain, nor did I have a ton of free fluid..... My understanding is that OHSS gets worse when you get pregnant, because your body starts to naturally make HCG, which causes the symptoms. Now, I did do HCG booster shots (every third day, I had a diluted shot of HCG) and thought that was the reason.....however, it wasn't!! Since then, my stomach has still not gone down (7.5 weeks today) and have been in maternity clothes since....my ovaries are still slightly enlarged, with a small amount of fluid. I am sure as soon as ovaries return to normal size.....I will be starting to show!!

Good Luck!!! I wish you the best and can't wait to hear the good news!!!!!

P.S. My test was supposed to be on a Sat. I called on Wed to complain about the bloating and the difficulty in breathing..this was on day 9 (a Wed) after transfer..because of the problems with breathing they had me come in for U/S...she initially wasn't going to test my HCG since it was still pretty early, but she did anyway, (of course saying that if it came back really low, we wouldn't know if it was the booster shots in me, or the real deal & we would have to retest) Well the HCG came back at 56...positive)
