Stefanie,
Just a word, it's late and I have to go to bed, I do a big presentation tomorrow. But I wanted to tell you that I feel for you too. Those ER docs should be hung by the &%$/*"! Geez, they ALL do that. They see you cramp and/or bleed and scream "miscarriage" before you even have time to sit back up on the table. SHEEW!

I'm so glad the ultradound reassured you! During my last pregnancy, I lost huge clots and bled a lot, and the baby's heart was still beating strong. I also remember someone else, maybe on this thread, my memory is failing me, I've worked all evening... but she lost big clots and bled a lot, and thought everything was over, and was told so by the ER docs. Well she's still preggers and the baby is doing fine. The doc who wrote the pregnancy book I'm reading lost a huge pool of blood at 8 weeks when she was expecting her twins (she knew because her seat was soaked!). Turns out the babies were just fine.

Like you said, you stopped the PIO 5 days earlier, and that may have caused the bleeding. If you're like me, my doc told me my cervix is VERY fragile, by which she meant it's easy to make it bleed. So if they didn't see any hematoma or collection inside, the bleeding is probably not related to your beautiful babies! :D

I'm happy that the CVS test went okay. You really went through a lot during the last few days, and I really hope things just calm down and run smooooooothly this week. Put your feet up and entertain yourself sweetie, you've deserved it!

Amy,
congrats on the nice ultrasound! Grow baby grow! :D You're like my best friend. Her placenta is at the front of her uterus (belly side) so her doc told her not to freak out if she still feels no movement whatsoever at week 24... good to know! As for the medical assistant, they probably want to save time. The assistant will screen you for all sorts of things and do your medical history. Then his majesty the doc will only have to read the "important" stuff and get going with the physical checks and adress your concerns... ;)

Stacy,
Congrats on the nice apt! How nice that your DH was there! I,ll do the prenatal tests on October 27th (ultrasound and blood tests).

Okay, really gotta go to bed...

Oh, by the way... I have a yeast infection. Was diagnosed by my new physician when she did the physical. Apparently, it's really important to check with your doc to make sure it's a yeast infection even if you know the symptoms. The pharmacist told me a yeast infection treatment for only a mild or false infection can harm the baby. The doc told me to take either Canesten or Monistat, but the 7 treatments formula. I checked with my clinic, and apparently you can take vaginal inserts for yeast infections along with the PIO. Lots of things to put in at night, but at least I know they're not interfering with each other. Believe me... brush your teeth BEFORE and rush to bed as soon as all that load is safe inside, lol! Thought I would share the info!

Kissies,

Brooke- I just saw your post about where you live in ct, and suprise, I am also in West Haven. I have lived here for my entire life, all 27 years of it. I love it, but very expensive, especially for homeowners in this city with the taxes. My new baby girl and I often enjoy walks down at the boardwalk. I grew up close to the beach, but dh and I know live near the UNH football field off of the Post rd. But with you living near the beach, where I grew up, I bet I know alot of your neighbors. Many people from west haven end up being lifelong residents and you get to know people. I am glad you are enjoying it so far, and if you have any questions about the area, don't hesitate to ask.

Michele~That is so funny that you live in West Haven...what are the odds that someone on an international forum lives in the same town as me??? That is crazy! I also walk often on the boardwalk (mostly near Bradley Point) b/c we live on Painter Ave. right behind (or in front of) the high school...off Kelsey, near Turks. I'm sure you know some of our neighbors. I'm 29 and we have a beagle who comes with us on our walks...so if you see a small girl with brown, curly hair with a beagle walking, please don't hesitate to say hi! Our favorite sushi restaurant...Daiko...is near where you live too:) Have you ever eaten there? I saw in the paper today that UNH is looking into putting a law school in WH too, next to the new train station--that'll be great for home values I'm sure. So funny...it's definitely a small world.

As for the discussion about meeting with a PA BEFORE seeing your dr...the same thing happened with me for my first appt. this week. The appt. was with the midwife and next time it will be with the Dr. I got to hear the hb for the first time though:) strong and steady! I have my genetic testing bloodwork and u/s this week. I'm a little nervous about it...should I be? The midwife said that being an IVF patient automatically gives me higher risk factors for genetic abnormalities in my baby, even though I'm only 29. Does anyone know anything about this?

Have a great rest of the week!

Brooke :D

Brooke,

What your midwife said makes me really angry. Sounds like she has no idea whatsoever what she's talking about. Why in the name of heaven would our babies have more genetic problems?

I checked on MEDline. Here are the conclusions of a 2008 study:

Multi-foetal gestations remain the principal cause of adverse perinatal outcomes after ART (artificial reproduction techniques). Singleton ART pregnancies have an increased risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight at term. Non-lethal congenital malformation rates are not increased following ART. Placenta praevia is increased following ART.

Here's another 2008 study:

Birthweights were lower and LBW rates higher after fresh embryo transfer than after FET. Results for FET were similar to those for non-ART conceptions. This suggests IVF and ICSI laboratory procedures affecting the embryos are not causal but other factors operating in the woman, perhaps associated with oocyte collection itself, which affect endometrial receptivity, implantation or early pregnancy, may be responsible for LBW with ART.

So, according to them, FETs are similar to natural pregnancies! Huh!

Here's another, they put IVF and FET in the same basket:

Perinatal outcomes, such as preterm delivery, low birth weight and some obstetric complications, are increased significantly after in-vitro fertilization (IVF) compared with spontaneously conceived pregnancies. The degree of difference is greater for singletons than for twins, especially with regard to preterm delivery which is increased two fold in IVF singletons and by 40% in twins. It is difficult to obtain accurate outcome information because of unmeasured confounders such as smoking status and fetal reduction. It is also unknown whether IVF technologies or patient infertility is the major contributor to adverse outcomes. Birth defects are increased, shown in a number of systematic reviews, and there has been a particular interest in imprinting syndromes. Epigenetic modifications may play a larger role in IVF outcomes, as yet unidentified. There is no apparent increase in adverse outcomes in children up to adolescence, although further studies are needed to examine longer-term risks, including those for cancer.

Yet another:
Our analysis does not indicate that the ICSI-procedure represents significant additional risks of major birth defects in addition to the risk involved in standard IVF. The data was limited, particularly on risks of specific categories of defects. We found no significantly increased risks after ICSI for any of the categories cardiovascular defects, musculoskeletal defects, hypospadias, neural tube defects, or oral clefts.

That one concludes:
Pooled results from all suitable published studies suggest that children born following ART are at increased risk of birth defects compared with spontaneous conceptions. This information should be made available to couples seeking ART treatment.

But you know how many studies they reviewed? 25... the study I cited before reviewed 22, but combined, their sample included no less than 5395 ICSI children...

On my clinic's website, they state that genetic defects are higher with ICSI children than in the general population. They added that IVF is not associated with higher rates of miscarriages (if you consider that many early miscarriages in natural pregnancies go unnotices, whereas it's never the case with IVFers). They said that statistics show that IVFers do have a higher number of premature births... but it is associated with a higher rate of multiples. So of course that influences stats...

Another study demonstrated a higher risk for birth defects in IVF children, but the difference with natural pregnancies, although statistically significant... is 1.8%! 6.2% birth defects in IVFers compared to 4.4% in the general population. I don't know for you, but it doesn't make me panic.

My doctor told me that all IVF pregnancies are considered high risk. When you scratch a little beyond the surface, you realize that all they mean is that they know our pregnancies are really, really precious. But she took no extra measure whatsoever because I'm an IVFer. No additional ultrasound, no additional blood tests or apts. And I've had high risk pregnant women as patients and let me tell you, they do get those extras right away.

I hope all those numbers don't make you freak out. But as a researcher, what I read from these studies is: IVF is associated with lower birth rates and more pre-term deliveries, especially in singleton pregnancies (that contradicts what my clinic says on the website; they blamed it on twins). That's a risk I'm ready to live with. We're not even talking premature, we're talking pre-term. IVF is also associated with lower birth weight. Well, if births generally occur earlier than term and 25% of us expect twins, it's no surprise. As for genetic defects, they seem indeed higher with IVF children, but that 1.8% increase doesn't impress me. They can't even make a causal link between the IVF procedure and that increase. Some studies speculate that the mother's smoking habits or infertility causes (such as poor egg quality) could contribute to that increase. In a word, they don't know. And that's EXACTLY why clinics don't warn us about genetic risks because the numerous studies that have been done these past 30 years were unable to make a causal link. You can't pass a law on that...

So your midwife may say what she want, let her talk. If she tells you something like that again, ask her the titles of the studies she's basing her judgement on. Then slap that 1.8% difference in her face. If genetic testing is important for you, then do it, but don't do it because some midwife scares you with supposed facts that she can't even back with empirical studies and data. I'll do prenatal tests like you; I'll have blood tests done to find specific markers (such as Down Syndrome) and I'll have an ultrasound. I would have done it with a natural pregnancy anyway. But I'd like to see a doctor or a nurse try to convince me that, just because I'm an IVFer and despite the fact I was 28 when my eggs were collected and fertilised, I have to do an amnio. I'd really like to see them try!

Good night ladies!

Brooke - your physician's assistant is HIGH and really needs to be called on what she said, and made to explain herself.

First of all, people have IVF for ALL DIFFERENT reasons. (I am older, have POF and retardation in my family. I am a high risk and my docs don't even talk to me like that.)

someone with tubal issues, or male sperm issues or one ovary or WHATEVER has absolutely NO higher risk than a normal person, but they need IVF because the sperm don't reach the eggs naturally. Jesus, what a friggin' moron.

I would talk to your primary care giver there about the treatment you have received so far. who knows, maybe she does this to others too, and she could find another area of medicine in which to work.

Hello.

Just finished reading all the post from the past few days.
Sorry won't b able to write personals.

Just a quick update from me:
Had my 10week scan (well,9w6d) today and it was beautiful!
We saw our twins and they measure 29.86 and 32.something, so everything is ok.

I don't think i have gained much wait. To be honest i have not weighted...
The tummy is now showing more.

Sorry once again for a this quick post.
As you know i went to Venice and came back yesterday so too much work piled up plus our server crashed so we have to do all the invoices manually which is a nightmare!

That's it for now.
Luv to all
Anie.

PS- Valerie: I'm really sorry for what happened. I can't believe it's all over. I hope you and your DH take some time off to recover. Please do take care of yourself and you know we all are always here for anytime you need to talk. Sending you lots of hugs.Anie

Stefanie,
How are you doing with the pelvic rest? How is the spotting? I hope the cramps have subsided and that you feel more rested. Should I enter more apt dates on the list?

Anie,
I'm so sorry I didn't update the list... you had your ultrasound today and I forgot to send you a message. CONGRATULATIONS on your two healthy buggers! I can imagine that, after Venice, work seems a little hectic, lol! I hope the technical problems are over soon. By the way, let me know when you book new apts.

To all the others... where are you?? Amanda, Stacy, smiles, all the others, we miss you!!! Come back and play! :D

Hugs,

Thanks All for your posts about my midwife scaring me a bit. It's weird b/c the office is an OB/GYN and infertility clinic, so I know that they treat infertility patients all of the time. I think she was just trying to review all of the tests that high risk patients can get and the reasons why I should get them (or not). If everything is good at next week's first trimester screening appt., I'll be a happy camper. I'm certainly not planning on any invasive testing unless absolutely necessary.

Sorry, I have a terrible headache and don't want to take meds, so I'm going to stop reading tiny typing on the computer now:)

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Hey Ladies - I'm scheduled for my first trimester testing on November 3rd. I'll be glad when it has passed! Nothing too exciting going on here. Feeling a bit better than I was, napping a lot, and that's about it! Next weekend the in-laws are in town. They don't know the news yet, so it will be fun telling them. It will be our first telling of the news to people that didn't know about the IVF, so they will be the most excited and surprised :)

Hope everyone is feeling well and good luck with everything!

my next ultrasound is 10/30... if all goes well I will be officially in my 2nd trimester.... (actually a few days in, but we're using that appointment as the go ahead to tell people)

In the meantime, my other baby, my play will be opening in DC the week before.... after that I'm just going to RELAX.

I did hear a theory about that bleeding from a friend who is having twins. Her doc says the uterus stretches, but then with twins it gets pushed out further and there can be bleeding. And it's interesting because the day after that episode - my stomach was pooched way out. As my midwife sister said - you look like a singleton pregnancy does at 16 weeks! I thought that was interesting.
