breast pumps

Post by Tara2009 »

Hello Ladies,

Sorry to barge in here. I am just 23 weeks pregnant, and have a long way to go. But I started researching on things to buy for the baby and myself and wanted to consult some new moms. Are you ladies using breast pumps? Which brand or type is good? I heard that the latest electronic pumps are good, but have no idea about them. Any advice would be helpful.

It was really great reading about your new borns. Enjoy your time!

Thanks,
Tara

Hi Tara,

Welcome.

I do use both electric breast pumps at work and manual one at home. For electric one, I made my own hybrid by combining the pump from Playtex and the plastic accessories from Medela. All friends of mine use Medela breast pumps. I rent hospital grade (Medela Lactina Select) before I bought my own and liked it also. For manual one, I use Avent. I take this to travel also.

All the feb moms,

How are you doing? Angram, is DD feeling better now? DS spits up often but never a whole lot of what I feed him. But DD used to threw up a lot due to underfed (surprise, isn't it?). I hope your DD was not infected by any stomach virus. How is the whooping cough issue? I live in constant fear since DS is chewing everything he can reach in the daycare and I see almost everyone with a running nose there...

About food, I usually start with 2oz solid (cereals in milk) per day (dinner time) at the beginning for 2 weeks to a month or so. Then I increase to 4 oz (2 oz cereals in milk plus 2 oz vege or fruits at dinner time) for another month or so. I don't really follow any guidelines but I do follow the baby's cues. Both of my babies give me strong signals to let me know whether they are interested in the food that I am feeding them. I don't really know how much is proper amount but I don't think I should feed him more than 6 oz of solid food a day before they turn to 9 month. BTW, the reason that I feed them at dinner time is because they are in the daycare at daytime. Now, DS is eating 2 oz or so solid food at daycare at noon and 4 oz solid at home at dinner.

Whatever you choose to feed the baby, remember to feed her one kind of food for a week before you change to another kind to make sure she is not allergic to it.

Got to go to pick up the kdis, talk to you all next time.

Greetings parents!

I have been remiss in getting back to this board, and recently my husband reminded me of it! Its great to hear of everyone's news, as I try to get caught up on all that has transpired.

Liam is now 6 mos old. We missed our early part of 6 mo checkup, and don't have it til the end of the month as our ped is out of town. I'll know more stats then :) For now, if you'd like to peruse his blog and photo site, here is his address:
http://liamshaun.spaces.live.com
He's a pretty busy little boy, and is so precious to his dad and me. Apart from his great grandmother passing away 1 week exactly after he was born, he has been the light of our lives.

He eats oatmeal and pears for now. I just bought yams, peas, more pears and mango to make his food. When you do the math, making your own is simple, and cheaper than buying individual jars, etc. If you can add water to something, you can make your own babyfood :) I have a food mill that's portable, and I'll use the blender or food processor.

As for pumps & breastmilk I had a terrible time with breastfeeding. No one ever tells you about that! My let-down was so painful I was crying 8 times per day, round the clock. I pumped for 5 mos, and I needed to move on. I used the hospital rented Medela Symphony and it worked great. He has been on Organic Similac since he started it, but I'd like Enfamil to come out with an organic one because it'll push the costs down! Its way too expensive if you ask me, but for now what are we to do.

We have 2 classes per week right now; baby yoga and music. He really responds to, and loves music. I had gone to our hospitals 0-3 month class originally, and that helped us to connect with other moms and parents.

I hope to catch up with more of you, but for now I wanted to say hello and continue to wish everyone loads of happiness.
Our precious Liam was born 2/4/09!

ftg - Thanks for sharing your pics, Liam is absolutely precious! You're looking great as well, motherhood is treating you well :) I'm sorry to hear you had such a difficult time with your letdown, what a trooper you were for 5 months! I'm also going to try and make Audrey's food, but for now she's just on cereal. We just moved from rice to oatmeal, so I'll probably start vegi's next week..I'm excited :)

Children - Audrey is doing great, thanks for asking. I'm still waiting on the whooping cough test results, gotta love the state's timeliness in getting back with us! The pedi put her on the medication, just in case, so if she had it it is now gone. Other than that she is doing great.

I'm trying to post more pics out to our website. All of the Audrey pics are in her folder, if you'd like to check her out these days :) www.chrisandang.com. My DH needs to update the main page, since it still says Audrey is 6 weeks old.

I hope everyone is doing well and loving motherhood. It has absolutely changed my life, Audrey is just the most beautiful joy a mother could ask for.

Hey Ladies!

Hope everyone is doing well. We are doing great here! I am loving every second of being a mommy! Ok-- not the seconds in the middle of the night, but all of the other ones :) I am luck to say that I don't have many nights that I even get out of bed, Jack is sleeping well and is a very happy baby! He is getting big! He is almost sitting up onhis own and is up on all four rocking...so I think he will be crawling any day now. He is eating all Stage 1 foods and I bought stage 2 to try this weekend. He is a great eater, but cant eat bananas, they dont agree with his belly! We had his 6 month pics done and they are GREAT! If anyone has facebook...look me up Stephanie Wertz. I have al my pics on there....posting them on here is too much work! Hope everyone is having a good summer. We are off to the beach for the weekend tomorrow!

Tara2009, if I were you, I'd wait to see how breast feeding works out before getting a breast pump. I bought a breast pump as soon as I got home from the hospital. I bought a Medela...the expensive one that allows you to pump both breast at the same time. I only used it for 8 weeks, because I never produced enough milk. Had I known breast feeding wasn't going to work out for the long haul, I would've rented one from the hospital and saved some money. Oh well...you learn from your experiences.

Hi Ladies! It's good to hear that many of you are doing well and that your babies are growing and developing nicely. Zariya is doing well also. She's already on 2nd foods and oatmeal. I thank God that she hasn't had an adverse or allergic reaction to any of the foods, although, she doesn't particularly care for peas. She's getting bigger and heavier and doing new things every week. She's a very happy baby and smiles all of the time. I absolutely love being a Mommy, and I'm so blessed to be able to stay at home with her to watch her grow. DH and I have been contemplating having another child, but I hate the thought of having to go thru the emotional rollercoaster of dealing with IVF again....not to mention the cost. So, I'll just continue to enjoy my little bundle of joy.

Take care Ladies and enjoy the moment...time is flying, and these babies are growing fast! :D

IMBlessed - So happy to hear Zariya is doing well and already on the 2nd foods, excellent! We are also contemplating having our 2nd, since I'm not getting any younger :), but DH really isn't too sure about another round of IVF. We're trying naturally so far, but if this doesn't work I'm hoping to go again..Audrey needs a sibling.

Neffi - I added you to my FB page, so if you get a random request from Angela, it's me :) I totaly agree and am absolutley loving being a Mom, although not so much in the middle of the night. Audrey started waking up 2x during the night last week, and man is it killing me. Pedi says she's hungry at night, so we're bumping up the solids during the day to see if she'll eat more and then sleep longer at night. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Audrey had her 6 month checkup today and was perfect! She's 18.4 lbs and 28.5" long, which is off the charts :) She got on her knees last Saturday, started rocking on Monday, and moved one knee forward today. She just lunges herself from there, so she hasn't quite figured it out yet. I'm thinking just a few weeks, so we'll see. I just purchased my beabe baby food maker yesterday, so maybe this weekend I'll actually start the process. Goodness, I have no idea what I was thinking...like I have any spare minutes in my day. I'm excited to try though, I'll let you know how it goes.

Well I hope everyone else is doing well. Talk to you soon.

ang-- I did get your FB request and confirmed it this morning. Wow Audrey is a big girl! Jack was only 15 lbs 4 oz at his 6 month check up. But he is a little peanut! He is almost crawling as well. He has been up on his knees for weeks, but still wont move. He has mastered the army crawl and can get where ever he wants to go. I looked at some of your pictures but need to take the time to look at all of them at some point. Where do you guys live?

Hi All!!!!

Wow, lots of growing babies. Sounds like everyone is doing well. I am glad to hear.

Gracie is getting HUGE!!! She has not had her 6mo yet because we had to delay her 4 mo shots due to an oatmeal reaction. My guess is she is 20lbs EASY. About 27 inches??? I will let you all know in Sept. She is on her hands and knees as well rocking. She gets stuck that way then pitches a fit because she falls on her belly. Her sleep patterns are all over the place. She was doing so well sleeping, then we went to OH then ND. All the car seat driving has her all screwed up.

Anyway, she just woke up!

Neffi - I just checked out your pictures and Jack is absolutely precious and looks like such a sweet and happy boy! He was born really early, right? Guessing that's why is is a few lbs smaller, that and Audrey likes to eat 24/7..she gets that from her mom :) I post most of our pics on our website as well, so you can also check that out - www.chrisandang.com. We live in Austin, TX and I'm sooo ready for some cooler weather. We're going on something like 67 days of over 100 degree temps!

Dakota - 20lbs huh, bet she is adorable! I hear ya on the sleep patterns, same at our house. We had Audrey doing pretty well, but she hasn't slept more than 5-6 hours straight since last Friday night. I felt her gums last night and feel a little bump, so think she may be teething. Not really sure, so I'll just keep checking and do all I can to help ease the pain, if that's the case.

OMG Dakota, I'm so sorry to hear about Gracie's poor little bottom! Excellent news though on the 19lbs, I love it. I bet she has beautiful chunky legs you just want to kiss on all the time, that's what we have at our house :)

You ladies will appreciate this... I am busting at the seams, but its a secret. My sister who has tried to get pregnant for 19 years is pregnant!!!! Can you believe it!!!! She is 6 weeks. I am SO thrilled!!!! Please say a little pray for her, she is almost 40 and I hope everything turns out perfect. I am a little worried (as you all know by now I am the big worry wort).

Hope all is well!!!!

Michelin Baby is a cute nickname :) We say Audrey has thankles (instead of cankles), it's just one big trunk of thigh, calf and ankle :) My Mom always asks if I'm putting rubber bands on her arms and legs, it's just so damn cute! All I can say is the girl doesn't go without a meal.

I'm so excited for your sister, what wonderful news! I'll definitely keep her in my thoughts!!

Hi Everyone,

We just had 6 months check up yesterday with Max and he is now 22lb13oz. Big boy! He is 7 months old now. Unfortunately, we found that he has another ear infection. I suspected this before the trip to Florida 10 days ago because he had a brief fever.

I am not bragging, he starts to call Ma Ma and Pa Pa seemingly intentionally now. He starts to lift himself with both hands and to move slowly to reach stuff now. He even pulled himself up with the coffee table yesterday!

It's fun to raise him. I am lucky to be a mom to an infant again, truly.

Take care everyone.
