Actually, it doesnt have to double in 48 hours. As long as it is like 66% then it is good. Your numbers seem great. They are strong and could possibly be twins. Although you can't tell until your ultrasound.

My clinic continues the tests awhile longer regardless of doubling. We do them along with the fist couple of ultrasounds, but many clinics don't. The ultrasounds are much more definitive, so some don't see any point in testing hCG at that point.
AmandaM is correct that doubling is not a formal rule. The analytically derived value I have seen was a factor of 1.6, which you exceeded. Still, higher and faster is generally better.
