Post by sue e »

Hi,

Only just gone on NHS list for ivf and feeling all alone and annoyed that we cannot afford to try ourselves. How did or is anyone else coping? My mind is trying to work overtime on ways to raise the cash, but somehow i dont think DH would like to go and work the streets!! He would kill me if he knew i wrote this!

waiting

Post by Bronagh »

it took so long for us to get appointments and then tests that by the time we activated our list on the waiting list we were at the top.My advice is just get on with your life do interesting things and know that it will come around eventually. Also have you tried acupuncture many people have sucess with it who have not even had sucess with IVF.

I dont know what your infertility problem is but I'd consider getting Zita Wsts book fertility and conception. It has lots of good information on preparing your body for conception in general and then IVF.

But most of all be good to yourself.............................................

Thanks for the reply Bron, its just good to know others who have been there and moved on.

I had a ectopic in dec 03 and recently found out other tube is blocked, so no chance of conceiving naturally. So all this is quite new to me.

Hi Sue

I can totally sympathise with you on the wait thing. Our hospital in Gateshead is about the same for NHS treatment. I am 39 and my time for NHS tratment is not until I am 41!!!

I took out a bank loan for the first treatment (Oct 2003) and am still paying it off, and we are about to try again as DH has a big fat bonus coming soon, so we are using some of that for our next private IVF.

How old are you?
1 failed ICSI, 1 failed FET, next treatment starts in May with EC on 1 June 2004, hoping for a 2005 baby!

Hi Lotti,

Sorry its taken a while to reply but the computer was playing up and still is although i can now use it. I did try a couple of time to use the ones at school but have all got the sassa virus.

Im 32 and we only started trying a few months ago. I had a ectopic (dec03) which ruptured and other tube is blocked, but i know that we are in a better situation than many as it has all been diagnosed so quickly.

I am really pleased that you are able to try again very soon and hope you get the best results ever. It is sad that people have to get themselves in debt to try, but if its the only option you have to do it, i even considered remortgaging but knew we couldnt afford the repayments.

It is a awful situation for people to be in and the feeling of isolation is sometimes unbearable, im just glad there are sites like this. It really encourages me to read about the positive outcomes, it is hard trying to keep positive in the midst of it all.

Please keep me updated on how things are going, and i really wish you all the best.

Hi Sue,
It is a real bummer having to wait. We are on a 2 yr waiting list but did manage to raise some cash to have a ivf go. Unfortunatley it was negative but we were lucky to have some frozen embryos and are going for a nother cycle with these (a frozen go is so much cheaper thank god about £800.00).
Hang in there..... if people get pregnant who are on the list your name will come up quicker.
Have they suggested surgery to unblock your other tube?

Hi Jane

Good to hear from you i am amazed that when you use frozen eggs its only about £800 compared to the 3 to 4,000 for the first try. I really to wish you the best of luck with your next attempt.

I take it that if you got pregnant going private, you then can't try on NHS when your turn comes, is this the case?

The specialist has said that there is only a 1% chance of the surgery working and does not really want to open me up and put me through all the risks again. They dont know exactly what has caused problem but both tubes twisted and distorted only that it could of been an infection at some point in my life. But on a positive note i suppose the wait gives me a chance to lose some weight (several bloody stone!) so two years might not be that long really! The only problem is i eat when i'm depressed, i better start thinking happy thoughts. :P

Have you had lots of support from friends and family? How long have you been trying? and what age are you and DH? Have you had any surgery?

Hope all is well

Hi Sue,

I am currently attempting my first IVF cycle. We have paid for this one privately but are on the NHS waiting list. You are only allowed 3 tries on the NHS and any private tries before this reduces the tries you can have on the NHS. So we are only allowed 2 attempts at NHS funded IVF now.

We were able to pay for this attempt and hopefully it will be successful and we won't need the NHS attempt. We can only hope and pray.
If not, we are up for NHS treatment spring next year.

Hi there,

Me & My partner know exactly what u r going through. We waited almost 2 and a half yrs on the NHS for our treatment, and have just started our 1st attempt. I felt exactly like u do now. Thought it was a lifetime but it soon goes. Keep your chin up! :D

Hi Shellie,

I can't bloody believe that the NHS would do such a thing, that is discrimination on the basis that you have or have been able to get together the finances. that has made me see red, how can they justify that, when you have paid yourself. In the Womens in Liverpool we have been told that should we be able to afford to go private (i'm doing the lottery religiously now) it will not affect our chances at ivf although they only do two cycles.

But on the otherside its is fab that you have the chance to try now and hopefully you will get the result youve waited for.

Do you happen to know which hospitals have the highest success rate, i've tried looking but couldnt find out.

Wishing you the best possible outcome

I wont ask where the name comes from!

I bet your very excited although at the same time scared, it must be horrible knowing that whatever happens is out of your control. I was reading a article today which was saying that 50% of the babies born through ivf have happened over the last 5 years. Thats great because it means that during the two year wait the doctors have been perfecting their technique, so youve got a better chance now of it working then back then. Fingers crossed.

I will be keeping a eye on you and shellie.

Thank you for the words of encouragement.

all the best

Hi Sue,

I do not know who has the highest success rates. With my work I couldn't travel too far because of time off etc so I am going to the new Edinburgh RI. They seem very well organised and the staff are very helpful. I've had no issues with them. I just hope I get a positive like all the other girls ont he site.

Hi shellie,

Have you started your treatment yet? Do You have any idea on how much time you need off during treatment? Although i've been reading up i'm not too sure as to exactly how much is done at home and what is done at hospital (except ec and et), but then again it probably varies by hospital. At the moment my job is on a yearly contract so although my ivf wont start for a good while it does worry me as to whether i will have a job. I had to take 4 weeks of after ectopic and i'm not too sure as to how the school will respond. But at the end of the day i would rather be broke and have a child!

Will be checking the boards every so often to see how its going.

Take care

Hi Sue,

I haven't had to take much time off at all, although I work flexi hours. My clinic scans between 8-9.30am on a first come, first served basis. As I have to scan every couple of days my DH and I turn up at 7.30 and are the first ones in. We make it back to work for 9.30 which isn't classed as time off. I am taking the 2ww off work and have that organised already. I just didn't give them exact dates. I work for a large company who allow special leave for IVF treatment which is a real bonus! :)

I guess how much time you will need off work will depend on how close you are to the clinic and what time they scan. I am taking the 2ww off work but some girls continue to work to keep things normal. I guess that is a matter of choice. I choose not to because I don't want to use the pressure and stress of work as an excuse in case I get a -ve.

Good luck.
