siouxsie - This is what I keep trying to tell my mom who wants me to "wait a few years" before trying for a second one: there are no guarantees with IVF on how long it's going to take. Given that it took us 4 years to get the first one, I think it would be insane for me to wait until I'm 35 and my chances of conceiving are starting to rapidly decline to start trying for the second one.

I love that people who take for granted flying in airplanes and vaccines (or, as you say, cancer treatments) will argue that IVF is "not natural." People have been arrested for refusing to treat their sick children with the latest treatments of modern science. I would say that the quest to have children falls under "the pursuit of happiness," and as such I'm not going to be ashamed for pursuing it to the fullest extent that modern science will allow.

2 things ...we are very open everywhere to everyone about IVF. We never ever want our son growing up with a secret and the notion that there is something wrong with the way he was conceived. He also has a right to know his medical history. Our hope is that by our being open about it...will give others the courage to also confide in at least one other person ....because having support has been key for us.

The other thing is...Dont wait. I got pregnant on the 1st IVF and because of my vertical cut classic c-section...the docs wanted me to wait 2 yrs. We waited 1.5 yrs...got pregnant and miscarried our 39 yr old frozen embyros. We just did another fresh cycle with 42 yr old embryos...and the quality is bad compared to 2.5 yrs ago. The docs said alot wouldnt change. It did. This cycle also failed...my beta comes back today...and I already know it's going to be negative. I am soo mad at myself now for waiting....it may have just caused us our dream of bringing home a sibling for Zach. I'm on the best and highest dosage of meds available already...so yeah, if especially if you are older...dont wait. That's my 2 cents.

Just for the record...When my beta comes back negative today...I have to go on FB and tell the world that we failed. Sad, but I'm okay with this...cause guess what world...IVF is not a given...it is not a cure-all...sometimes it fails...even though I did just put back 4 embryos.

Tammy - Thank you for sharing. And I am sorry to hear about your BFN this time around. Sounds like you have known for a while it didn't work - do you know where you are going from here?

I know that at 31 I'm not exactly old, but we started TTC when I was 25, so... None of my 27-year-old embryos worked, now I have 4 frosties that are 29. My mom was done having kids when she was 29, yet every step of the way she has been telling me that she supports me... "but is now really a good time?" I think maybe it's because it's so structured, people who don't get it the process think that it's more incumbent on us to only have a baby at some exact right cosmic moment. Plan it for "once you're more settled in your job" or "after the car is paid off" or "when the bathroom is finished being remodeled." If everybody waited for the perfect time, hardly anybody would have children!

For the record, despite having a baby at such in importune time my husband is up for promotion, we just got our car title in the mail, and the tub surround I tiled while massively 6 months pregnant (I always measured a month big - went straight out) looks damn good!! :)

You are right...there is no perfect time. I wish I wouldnt have worried about that at all...and would have tried again right away. You know what they say about hind sight. I could just kick myself right now. Beta is in ...and it is officially negative.

Yeah, in hindsight I wouldn't have spent all that money on birth control & POAS between the ages of 19-25. Little did I realize my guy already came with a built-in prophylactic... Will I be seeing you in a September or October board? I have been posting in the September one, but AF is so late it's looking more like October now.

I hear ya! We spent a ton of $$ on BCP'S and condoms in 20 yrs time. lol

We were just discussing on the summer cycle group that we'll start a Fall group...cause so many of us will fall right on the border of Sept and Oct...and others will be into Oct and Nov. We dont want to split up now after being together for the last 3 months.

How true! Also some shows like "Friends" touched on the topic years ago when Phoebe carried her brothers multiples. We do need a good drama!! I think we also need some celebrities come out VERY publically to help get the word out. We all know about Celine Dion, etc... I am by no means star struck.. I sort of think people put too much emphasis on what the stars are doing but this is exactly the reason why I think they need to stand up and help get people talking and especially helping get better insurance coverage for IF!!!!

Hi All,
I saw "Maybe Baby" with Joely Richardson and Hugh Laurie a few weeks back. It is a very true to life depiction of IVF or IUI don't remember but it was an ART. It had quite a bit of British satire thrown in which made it hilarious at some times. Don't want to give away the ending but it shows most of the challenges we all go through when we started the ART journey. Check it out. You might enjoy it.
Also, We can't forget the "Family Guy" episode where the dad chose to do ART for the dog rather than his wife! It was pretty funny in a sad way. Anyway, best of luck to everyone!
Love hugs and baby dust to all,

Tammy and Wondercat you girls really hit the nail with your posts. I had my son from my first marriage at 18 ( I know it is crazy but thank God for little Christopher) it may have been the wrong time but it didn't stop me from finishing college or grad school or being at all of my son's sports, class parties, taking him to Disney etc. Now at 28 and a cancer survivor DH and I have been trying for almost 3 years and it just isn't working. I could just kick myself for waiting because I feel like I used to be able to have children but now I can't. Being "only 28" everyone tells me to just wait and that it will happen when "the time is right" but no one knows what a struggle it has already been and that going through cancer really scared me about waiting because the opportunity for IVF is not guaranteed and can go away for me at any moment.

I also agree with the need to make infertility more public because I feel like it is a disability for us just like other disabilities but because of such lack of any knowledge on the part of other people we all have to spend thousands of dollars because of lack of insurance as well as the stupid mean comments people make to us.

Anyone been watching Giuliana & Bill on E! I think we might be a bit behind in the UK, but it was a season finale tonight where they discovered their cycle of IUI didn't work so now they are considering whether or not to go for IVF. It talked a bit about what the IVF involves and Giuliana was discussing how much of a deal it is compared to what she had expected IVF to involve - it was interesting to watch them go through that decision process and I take my hat off to them for being so public about it.

Yes, I just watched the season premiere and they did go through IVF and became pregnant! But, I think there might be some complications. I didn't watch the next episode so I am not sure but I will catch it later. When I was watching it, I thought immediately of this thread.

"Then She Found Me"- In this movie, Helen Hunt gets pregnant and tells her boyfriend who acts like he doesn't love her anymore. They break it off. She considers abortion but then has a miscarriage. Later on, she finds her own biological mother as she grows closer to her Movie-star famous mother, she considers IVF, which is THE one thing she thinks her mom can buy her is a baby, but her pg test comes back negative. In the end we see her adopt a chinese little girl. I really did NOT like this "powerless" movie. No connection and I really was depressed after watching this movie.

I don't see anything wrong about Infertility in movies... This just portray the truth that is happening around us today. That many women not as fertile as anybody... This movie is nice to watch specially for those who is very difficult to bear a child in a natural way,...
