OHSS - for Dagny

Post by marydemo »

Hi Dagny,
I am new to this board - and I saw this post. It is very tough what you are going through; as I have been a victim of OHSS during my first IVF try which was negative. I hope everything works out for you. I do have a few questions for you:

1. Since you have already been through OHSS in your previous attempts; did the doctors not decrease the dose of FSH? or are you such a high responder that you produce a lot of follicles for a very low dosage of FSH too?
I was taking 4 ampules of follistim and produced 28 follicles; and I am now concerned about doing a second attempt ; don't know how many ampules of FSH to take to decrease the chances of OHSS.

2. I was sorry to read about Katelyn. You mention that there was a heart problem. Were the doctors able to pinpoint to the cause of the problem? Was it to do with ICSI?
Some of these procedures are so scary.

Let me know.
Hope things really work out very well for you; and yes please drink and drink and drink. I think at the end that is what saved me after having had to do 2 culdosentesis to remove more than 3 litres of fluid accumulated in 2 days because of OHSS.

Please do respond, Dagny...

Hi there

Thank you Mary, Traci, Denise, Kel, Sue m, Caz, Juliana, Shellie, Sarah and Debra for all your replies and suppoet it really means a lot to me and you are all very special people.

Now, a funny story - On Friday I was waiting for the phone call to find out if I had to go back on Saturday for another scan and bloods. The call never came so by 9pm I didn't know whether to inject of if I had to get up early and go into the hospital. I paged the on call nurse who never called me back so I just injected like normal. The next morning whilst pottering around the doctor rang in a right old flap wondering where on earth I was as she had been waiting for me in the clinic. I said I was at home having breakfast and she said she had left a message last night with DH about coming in this morning. She so hadn't as DH was getting pi$$ed off that no one had called and told me to page them! She insisted that she had left a message with him and that she really had to scan me and take bloods. So, we charged over there and she was ringing me all the time on my mobile to see how far we were off  Honestly!!!

By the time we arrived she was pacing the floor looking a bit fed up when another couple came in saying they didn't know why they had to come but as she had called them last night they came in anyway - can you see where this is going????? She looked all red faced  and had a few apologies to make and we all saw the funny side to it - eventually. The fact that the doctor kept on saying my name during her message to the other couple's husband he just said 'Yes I'll tell her' What a divvy??

We made sure the doctor had the correct phone number for next time.....

Anyway.......

My follies are growing and have got to about 15/16mm now so I have to half my dose of Puregon last night and tonight. I am back for scans and bloods tomorrow and on Tuesday. I could drive to the hospital with my eyes closed now as I have been up there for years on a daily basis  I am drinking copious amounts of water and feel OK in myself.

My uterine lining is 10mm and looking good so the doctor was pleased with that.

Mary - To answer your questions, Yes they did reduce the FSH dosage. I was on 200 Puregon the first time and they took it down to 150 which is what I have been on since. I didn't get OHSS the 2nd and 3rd times but could have had they not monitored me carefully, I did over stimulate though. I have responded very quickly again for some reason but hopefully we are keeping the OHSS at bay. As you got OHSS your doctor will tell you how much to take. He wont leave it up to you to sort out. I too had to have fluid drained from my stomach with a drain and it was awful. I would however go through it all again though if it meant getting my dreams come true.

As for Katelyn's heart defect. We will never know if it was a direct cause from having the ICSI. I asked my consultant about it and he told me that it is unlikely as there is no proof that it causes heart deformalities. ICSI is a factor in babies born with hair lip and cleft palate but her heart condition was just a congenital deformality. It's a possibility but not a probability.

I hope that this helps you and I wish you all the best in your next treatment. Let us know how you get on.

Love to you all, Dagny xkx

PS Denise - Someone down our road had a massive firework display last night and I thought of you with yours. I think I saw a light.........^i^

Dagny...the fact you could laugh at this, eventually, does you all credit. What a screw up! Glad everything got sorted out though in the end.

The 8th is so close now. I'm quite sure you're a mix of emotions, and who could blame you? Our support is the least we can do.

I'm off for a short trip to the family cabin - nearly every family has a simple cabin in the mountains/woods/lakeside. Always v. rustic and no luxuries at all. I'm lucky this one has water and electricity, many don't! Although no phone/pc so I'll be off the board for a few days. Have a good start to the week. I'll be back before your EC.

love
Debra.

Dagny.....the cabin wouldn't fetch a bean in rent!!! anyway, my MIL will be there - which is fine really as she'll give up the only bedroom to us! There's a 2-ring stove, a sliding door between bed and bath room and an extreme 50s feel to the whole place. Not a thing has been touched since her mother died 10 years ago and she'd not done anything to do it since it was built in '52. Maybe we could sell it to a museum? MIL's just had planning permission though so I'm really excited by the thought of having a slightly larger (it's 35 square m now!), more up to date, place that we can all go to. It's right on the edge of a lake so has gorgeous views of woods and a tiny island on which a lovely little house has been built. The people have to row out there.....All very idyllic and restful. Just wish I could have a glass of wine whilst there...but NO, I've only a few days to wait until I know that my next glass of wine will be next summer.... :)

love
Debra.

Dagny

just popped in to see how you were. Great to talk to you in the chat room friday - all very silly wasn't it and did not tell a certain person why his dinner was late!

What a story over the phonecalls - could see that coming - it's good you can laugh - if not you just cry and it all becomes too much. You don't always have to have water - you can add squash - I add Robinson R like it goes out of fashion. Am not keen on milk either so add a banana or strawberrries or both and put it in the food processor to make a milkshake.
Big hugs and hang in there
Love

Dagny - What a story that was!!!! Accidents do happen all over the place. Recently, I was sent for bloodwork, and the mailing that I received from my perinatalogist's office had my name on the envelope and paperwork for another patient inside. When I called the office, they were really apologetic and said to please destroy the paper with the other patient's name on it.

I am glad your doctor realized that it was her mistake - you and your DH have been waiting for this for such a long time, he would not have forgotten to give you that important message.

Anyhow - yes, I am glad you got to see the fireworks!!! All the way from NJ too!!

You are in my thoughts!

xo,
Denise

Oh you lot are so lovely :D

Had to have more bloods done this morning and as I had a hypnotherapy session booked in this morning too I had to go for the bloods really early. I left home at 7.15am and the blood place by 8am was heaving !! I was sitting there getting stressed as I had my injection to do at 8.30 and so I had to rush down to the ward where I have got a reputation as I have ben there so many times and asked them if I could use their treatment room to do my jab. One of the nurses who I became friendly with during my copious stays in there came with me and was amazed how quickly I drew up the drug and wacked it in my belly, pulled up my jeans and job done! I rushed back to bloods and still had to wait ages.

In the car park there had been an incident of hit and run or something and there was a man left by the kerb. The place was heaving with police and eventually an ambulance turned up! I couldn't get my car out for ages. Why do these things happen when you're in a rush??

I made it to hypnotherapy and I don't know if I feel any different but time will tell.

Got my blood results and my estrogen levels have gone up from 12,000 to 21,000 so no injection tonight and OHSS here we come. Really pi$$ed off but trying to be positive and keeping up the fluids which is getting harder as my belly is so bloated already

I just hope EC is still on for the 8th. I have another scan and bloods tomorrow so we shall see.

Love Dagny xkx

Hi dagny,

please try not to worry about OHSS, you have got to it yet, oyu seem to be holding at bay, have you tried some of the frut flavoured waters, some are very good and not as sickly as some of the dilute stuff. I also drank lots of Robinsons, it's not that old fashioned is it?? I'm on hols from work now, so I can log on a bit more now. I'm glad you are using the chatroom more, it is much quicker than the board but be careful, it can become addictive, don't go on any sites you don't know as you may meet some weirdies. Only joking.

hugs n stuff :D

Hi Dagny, How are you doing? Sounds like real drama at your clinic yesterday! I wish I was so quick with the injections - it can take 30 mins before I let DH give me mine (I'm a total wimp!!) .

Hope you're doing ok? How did you get on at with your scan and bloods today? Are you still on for EC on Thursday?

How are you finding hypnotherapy? AF arrived today - and i have just arranged to have a couple of sessions starting on Saturday. I'm really hoping it will help me overcome my fear of injections and make giving me them a bit less of a drama (especially as I have to inject buserelin and progesterone as well this time - aaaggghhh...!!!). The woman I am going to has had IVF herself and now has an 18 month old - I chatted to her last night and it was great as she understood exactly what we have to go through.

Take care

Love

Dolly

dagny, sounds like u have to take each day as it comes, but its not
good for the old stress factor, as for the weekend performance, i think
my BP would have gone thru the roof, i remember one of my hospital
cock ups when i was told my ET date which was a 2 day transfer
which i queried as i thought i was going to have a 3 day transfer, and
it wasnt till i was sitting there legs in air i was told that my file said
3 day transfer !!!!! so it was back home on the train not amused, but
i suppose we learn to cope over time.
Another suggestion re drinking water, have u tried adding Robinsons
pink grapefruit juice, my mum got me onto it and its lovely.
Do hope next few days go well and look forward to reading your
update.

Alison and Sarah

It looks like an advert for Robinson R - the sugar free one in our house!!! I love the Robinsons fruit and barley too - we have the whole lot and when I was on my 2ww I drank gallons of pink grapfruit and look what happened - it was all I could drink in the first 12 wks too as had gone off the orange and mango and the blackcurrant and apple made me sick - how weird.
Nobody says it has to be plain water Dagny as I told you - just pile in the fluids!
