Ivf clinics in London

Post by jgill »

Hello there,

I live in London and am at that stage where I am looking to find an IVF clinic in London. I have received written information from a lot of the clinics and have attended some open evenings and spoken with staff at others. Despite this am very confused about it all, but have narrowed it down to either
1) The Lister
2) Chelsea and Westminster
(mainly due to location reasons)

If anyone has been involved in either of the above I would be really interested to know how the experience was for you. At this stage I am leaning towards C&W simply because it is cheaper and money is an issue.
i would welcome any advice.

Thanks

I went to the Lister for FET. I didn't like it, got some dodgy advice from a doctor and thought the whole experience really impersonal. Its so busy and I ended up on two occasions having consultations in either a broom cupboard or corridor.
On the day of et, it was just in and out .. no time to relax.
I have had two othre treatments in Bournemouth. This clinic is alot smaller and 100% better than the Lister (in relation to the caring, and emotional side of things. You see one consultant at B'mth rather than the several doctors at the Lister).
I think the Lister does have better success rates than Bournemouth though, and they do try experimental things - i.e. steroids for Killer Cells, antiphospholipid tests etc. Bournemouth don't do this, as they say there is no research to suggest this is needed.
Things you might also want to look into is whether the clinic do egg sharing (as this is something that reduces the cost), if you are lucky enough to have enough eggs.
Hope this helps rather than confuses you further. If I was you I would just pop in to both clinics early one morning (around 9am - 10am) and see how busy it is then. This is when the majority of scans and blood tests are done for the people in treatment.
All the best and good luck with your treatment.

Hi Juliette,
Leanne here, ( still fairly new to this site)

I am in a similar position to you. I am moving to Hampshire soon and will also be looking for a good clininc. I will also consider London and Bournemouth like the other lady mentioned.

Briefly, my history is, I have had 1 fresh egg transfer and 2 frozen, all negative. So I need a clinic that will do more tests into my immune system etc. I am also looking for a clinic that will do the Blastocyst Transfer method.

I am also keen to keep costs down and have been looking into egg sharing. I have looked on a few hospital web sites and many do this. The details vary slightly, some will only charge for the drugs ( Belfast charge for drugs = £800 ish, Warwickshire = £300) I have heard that there is a clinic in the Worcestershire area that do it free with egg sharing??? I know they are all out of London but it is just to give you an idea of the savings that can be made.

I spoke to my local hospital at the moment and they told me that to egg share.... There are a lot of tests to undergo, me and my husband will need counselling before we agree to it and after 1st April this year the law changes so that a child born form an egg donor / share, from their 18th Birthday they can legally contact the hospital etc to find out about the mother. These are amongst the issues you will need to consider. However, good news, there is no waiting list because couples are crying out for eggs and you also get the great feeling of helping somebody else.

I have been in touch with another member on this site and she has suggested the ARG, I am not sure where it is but I believe it to be in the London region. I am going to look it up on the net.

I would like to stay in touch with your findings if that is ok and I will let you know mine. London will have so much to offer, others knowledge is essential.

Good luck with all,
Leanne :)

hi Juliette,
Leanne here again,
Just a quick one.

The web site for the ARG is not up and running yet but they do have an e mail address.. info@argc.co.uk
I have just sent them an e mail for info. There were a few bits on the site which included the success rates and Julie was right they do look very good. 38.8 % which was the top of the board. It is based in Wimpole Street London, I don't know London.
Another site I found that may be of use is the E.I.N Electronic infertility network. It shows you all the fertility centres within each area.
Hope this info. is of some use to you.
Bye for now.

Hi there
Something we picked up on drug costs - someone recommended we try Tesco's or other supermarket pharmacies. We used them whenever we could in the end as in some cases the drugs were half the price. It may take them a couple of days to get hold of them but it was worth the wait for the savings we got. Its definitely worth phoning around.

We could have got treatment locally but as we needed ICSI we wanted somewhere where ICSI was a common treatment. We decided on the London Fertility Centre on Harley Street. They do blastocyst and laser assisted hatching we which had on our second try. It gets quite busy at times but we felt we were in safe hands. Though, it may not be in the right area for you. Location definitely makes a difference if you end up having two or three appts in the space of a week.

Best of luck with your choices your treatment.

Juliette, hi

I have just found another site for you to try.

Then follow instructions to clinic patients guide then it will give you the option to choose a list of all the clinincs registered to do I.V.F.

Good Luck,

Hi
Thought you might be interested to know that I have had IVF treatment twice at the Lister, once 6 years ago and also last April. I have two beautiful girls to show for the stress and vast amounts of money. I have found them to be very professional and caring but everyone's experiences are different.

I was very lucky as the IVF worked first time on both occasions, even though my partners were different. I had a big scare in my most recent pregnancy and spoke to Dr Wren who was fantastic. I couldn't recommend them more highly.

Good luck.

I too have a beautiful 9 month old to show for my treatment at the Lister. I found them to be really helpful and professional and would go there again if we were to have another treatment.

I was with another clinic for my first 4 attempts (non of which worked), and it was my first treatment at the Lister - they picked up on things the other hospital failed to see, and also tried Blastocyst transfer (5 day fertilisation), I cannot fault them at all. They are very thorough, honest and `normal'.

Good luck with whoever you go with - I have also heard very positive things about the ARGC too.

Hiya
I had my treatment at the ARGC in London with Mr Taranissi. He looks into reasons why you may not be getting pregnant naturally and offers treatment protocols that other centres don't do which is a reason why, in my opinion, their results are so good. I hit a positive the first time and am 28wks preg with non identical girls :D :D .
The clinic is very very busy, and sometimes feels impersonal, but it's open 24/7 which is good if your treatment cycle falls at a weekend or bank holiday.
It's expensive but I went there because they get the results and you are closely monitored and can ring up anytime if you are concerned about anything. Sometimes your GP can pay for your drugs to help out with the cost.
Good luck
