3rd Trimester Friends (and almost 3rd!)

Post by Paige »

HI Ladies:

So welcome to the end of the 2nd trimester and the 3rd trimester. I hope everyone is doing great.

I failed the 3 hour gestational diabetes test. But I barely failed it...you needed to fail 2 of the 4 blood draws and the 2nd blood draw you needed to be 165 or under and I was 170, the 3rd blood draw you needed to be 145 or under and I was 148. So I was like trying to get out of it with the nurse and she told me it was like kind of breaking your arm, either you broke it or not. So now, tomorrow AM I have to go the hospital and see a dietician. I think she will also give me some kit or something to measure my blood sugar 4 times a day. Are you kidding me! I have to stick myself with needles again.
Then again, if the diet prevents me from gaining any more weight, it might be ok. I think I'm up 32 lbs and if that's all I gain that would be about half of what I gained the last time. My Dr. is suspicious that I passed the test with my last pregnancy, because she said it could explain why my daughter was 10 12/ lbs. I'm still shocked I failed it.

OH, well I hope that everyone is staying comfortable and able to sleep at night.

I think we've officially passed the bump stages....what should we call it?

Paige,

Thanks for starting the thread. It's nice to be in the third trimester - I thought it would never happen! Now I am convinced they will never be born.

Sorry to hear you have not passed the diabetes test. I have a girlfriend who is in the same boat and we are having lunch tommorrow. She also has to test levels after every meal, but I don't think she has to take insulin. At least we are used to the needles by now, sorry to say.

I did pass my test, amazingly, since I have gained 42 lbs. Also I think it is a common problem with twins. Part of me just wants to eat cookies like crazy since I've been avoiding sweets in fear of the test. But I'll try to keep to the low sugar diet. It isn't that long now.

I don't know about you, but I appear to have a watermelon in there. I have never seen a pregnant woman as big as me until I went to the Breastfeeding Multiples class last week. Some of the women were further along with twins and BOY were thay big!

Alicia:

I think we should measure again. Mine bump is much bigger than a soccer ball. With twins, I'm sure it's getting very big!
I'm measuring right around 41 inches.
I've also been having pretty significant water retention, when I take my socks off there is a huge divit around my ankles...it's pretty deep. I doubt I'd be diagnosed with toxemia though because my blood pressure is really really low. Last appt is was 72 over 44. I think that toxemia is water retention coupled with high blood pressure...though I absolutely could be wrong.

Has anyone heard from Janem: I think she's 30 weeks this week and they were thinking of inducing or scheduling her C-Section if one of her twins didn't start growing a little more.

Paige,

I have water retention just like you. It looks very funny when I take off my socks. Sometimes my ankles swell and I can barely get my shoes on. I've had it for a month. It was really bad in Maui, because it was hot there. And yes, I do think it is nothing to worry about unless you have high blood pressure or your hands/face start to swell, too.

I am measuring 40". I literally had never seen anyone bigger than me until I went to the twins class last week. Some of the moms were further along, and they were even bigger. I think it just looks really big on me because I am under five feet tall!

Yesterday I went grocery shopping and it took hours. I was getting dizzy, and by the end was so tired that I came home and fell asleep for four hours! I'm not sure what to think about that, except maybe I should shop in smaller increments, like a short market run a couple of times a week.

I hope all is going well with Janem and the girls - I didn't realize she was so far along. I imagine she is on bedrest by now? By the way, where is everyone else, for that matter?

Alicia:

I forgot what a little peanut you are! Under 5' and having a 40" bump must look big! Just know that I am only having one and still measuring bigger...it's like a mountain, but being 5'9" I think I probably have more places to put it! You must be so uncomfortable.

Are you eating small snacks to keep your blood sugar up? Being dizzy at the market doesn't sound like any fun at all. AFter seeing the dietician, I'm eating 3 meals and 3 snacks. I feel like all I do is eat. The main things were to stay away from a lot of bread, pasta, rice & processed sugar. Duh...we already knew that right?

Does peapod deliver to your area? After I had my daughter, the Dr. scared the daylights out of me, telling me not to go anywhere during flu season because it's so bad to have a newborn catch the flu. I had peapod deliver all of my groceries. www.peapod.com. I think it might be a little bit more expensive, but you end up spending less because there is no impulse buying.

Hope you are feeling better.

Paige,

 Well, not as uncomfortable as you may think!

I'm having a hard time eating snacks with all the thyroid, vitamins and iron supplements, because you can't eat with some of them and they all conflict with one another. But my diet is very healthy and the weight gain indicates that I'm eating enough.

I don't think we have Peapod, but we do have Andronico's which delivers. I wish Webvan was still in business. They were the best, with lots of organic produce - and they were cheaper than going to Whole Foods. I was sad to see them go. For now, I think DH will be doing the grocery shopping.

Wow, it's the home straight.... eeeks!! We start our antenatal classes next week... nothing like leaving it til the last minute! Although my doc still only wants to see me every 4 weeks, and hasn't done any blood sugar tests on me... How often are you going to the doctor?

Sorry to hear about your results Paige... will you have to use insulin, or will you be able to manage it with your diet?

Just measured my beach ball (literally!) and I'm now measuring 105cm or 42"! It's pretty big... I am only about 5'2"! I can't imagine that there's any stretch left in there... how are you guys faring with stretch marks?

Are you all still working? When are you planning on giving up? I am counting down the days.... 2 weeks and 3 days!! Can't wait!

We went to pick up the nursery at the weekend- and it's now all built... drawers are filled with lovely smelling clean clothes, bed is made..... all we're missing now is the baby!! How are all your preparations coming along?

Write soon,
Tanya

HI Guys:

Tanya: You're winning the bump contest right now! THough I think you and I are a couple weeks ahead of Alicia. Seriously I feel like I'm wearing a shelf, so on you two petite ladies it must really look like a shelf :o I love that!

The interesting thing about the whole gestational diabetes thing, is that according to the National Diabetic Institute and the American Diabetes Association....my results passed the 4 blood draw benchmarks. My hospital uses a more strict scale. You have to fail 2 out of the 4 draws...and with the associations I mentioned above, I passed all 4 blood draws. So I guess I am a very borderline case. THis week is a test to see if you can manage your levels with diet alone or you need to be put on Insulin. You prick your finger when you get up & 2 hrs after each meal. They give you a specific amt of carbs you need to eat (and not exceed) each meal. So I'm following the diet pretty well and you're supposed to stay at 120 or under for your goal.

I'm not even remotely close to 120, always way under. So I decided to do my own test. Just how much would put me over 120. So, we're at a friends house and ordered pizza for dinner, according to the plan I should have 45 carbs for dinner. Which equal about 1.5 pieces of pizza. So I eat 4 pieces of pizza, 2 handfuls of Cheetos, 1 handful of Sunchips, and a huge slice of Peanutbutter/Chocolate cream pie. It was well over 200 grams of carbs....over 4xs the amt I'm supposed to have. I test 2 hrs later and my blood sugar was 124. So it took that much garbage to put me over the limit. I'm presonally thinking....I dont' have a problem. We'll see what my Dr. Says when I see her on the 15th.

I should also have my C-Section date on the 15th.....yippee!

My Mom paints murals, so she's coming to do the nursery in early March. I think I'm going to have her do an oversized fower garden with butterlies and ladybugs, etc. I have bought a few new things, but I have kept most of everything from my 5 yr old. I was washing everything that I brought up from the basement that was stored in Rubbermaid tubs and it's all so tiny and cute. The little shoes and sandals, I was smiling the whole time.

Congratulations Tanya on being able to stay home in 2 weeks! I do real estate, so I work out of my house, and it's not really full time...especially in the Winter!

Hi Paige,Alicia and Tanya

good to see you are all keeping fairly well paige sorry you failed your test hopefully it will be able to be controlled with just a little change in your diet .
Alicia i know exactly what you mean about going shopping and feeling dizzy i went last week with my daughter and dp and i have told him i will not be going again i had to find somewhere to sit down i felt so bad i also can not lie or lean against my back as i find it very hard to breath and start to feel very faint im dreading my next scan on the 22nd im hoping the can do it with my sitting up rather than lying down otherwise 10 minutes and im gonna be out for the count.

Im measuring about 40-41 inches now and im only a little shortie to about 5 ft i feel like im walking around on little matchstick legs about to snap under the weight im really looking forward to giving birth now everything is so much hard work now i have started having a nap in the afternoon before i pick up my daughter from school the next few weeks seem like a lifetime tho the docs wont let me go past 38 weeks as its twins so i have about 11 weeks and 2 days before i reach 38 weeks but to be honest i think they will come a lot sooner the way they kick and move about in there feels like they are trying to break out bless them

oh well think iv gone on rather a lot here catch you all soon lots of love to all of you and them bumps xx

Hi girls

I know how you're feeling... am also feeling a little worse for wear now too... feel like a beached whale when trying to get comfy in bed!!! NIGHTMARE!! I can't even begin to imagine what it must feel like to be having twins... my little bundle feels big enough... and is most certainly getting more active and much stronger!!!

Am also getting quite bad water retention in my legs now.... so trying to keep my legs up as much as possible. Any recommendations????

The nursery looks really good now... it's suddenly becoming quite real!! YIKES!! Hopefully we'll learn something next week when our antenatal classes start.

Ah, the nursery! It is coming along slowly for us. It is the same room where I used to have my business, so I'm selling off the assets now. I'm also collecting all the gear. I am meeting a woman tommorrow to buy a hospital grade breast pump. It's quite expensive, but I can sell it again after, since it is meant for multiple users.

One crib is built, and we're keeping a single bed in there for now for my Mom, while the little buddies sleep in our room in the beginning. We have a co-sleeper. That seems to be the only bassinet strong enough to hold two of them.

Yes, Tanya, sleeping is the WORST! I've been on the couch for a month now, because the heartburn is bad and I'm always waking my husband up at night when I try to get comfy. I can't wait to sleep in the bed again!

Paige, your little experiment made me laugh. But it is a great way to get the information. You must be relieved that the "problem" is so very mild. Surely you will escape any insulin injections easily.

Angela, I have to ask my doctor how long they want me to go and how big the twins have to be. It must be nice to have an actual goal. I think that's what I need because right now it just seems like forever.

Hello Alicia, Paige and all

Post by Cate »

Hello everyone hope everyone is feeling fine apart from all the niggling problems ie hearturn etc although in the middle if the night it's very unpleasant Last night Paul came home one night only, we had a curry lime pickle and all I thought well I'm going to have heartburn anyway so what the hell!!!!!
It's half tern here and a particularly beautiful if slightly frosty morning, I have one of Jessie's friends round taking them swimming about 10am.
I have been doing really well, had a slight scare two weeks ago though as trace of protein in wee, but went back this Monday and clear and B.P. still okay, so hopefully keeping the pre eclampsia at bay!!
I feel very well though arthritis is still in remission almost completely and have started being positive for me anyway discussed nursery with Paul last night after reading everyone elses posts was very scared to do much when we had Jess.
It's tricky tho was going to do similar thing as last time 10 yrs ago (this is a different house) keep it plain paint do floor, and do borders when baby here and buy accessories, find theme, curtains etc etc but if you remember Paul knows what baby is.......bit scared of going into a shop with him!!!!!
I still don't want to know although I think it's a girl as feel pretty much the same and have same shape baby at the front very neat, except for the violent kicks which I don't remember with Jess??? You watch will go shopping and Paul will pick up a football or train paper or something!!!
Stay in touch Cate x x ps 28 weeks this Thursday

HI Ladies!

Finally have my C-Section scheduled, she said we'll schedule it for the morning of April 8th. She said they won't 100% confirm it until the day before though? I thought that was odd, but she is on call on Saturday the 9th, so if we don't do it Friday the 8th, she'll come in Saturday the 9th. It's kind of a relief knowing. Now I can start an official countdown, as well as start freaking out about everything else that needs to be done! 7 weeks...2 days to go.

I've been using the nursery as a playroom for my 5 year old for 3 yrs now, it has sooooo much junk in it. Barbie this, Barbie that etc. We have a contractor working on a huge desk/storage system for my daughters room so I can get all of her toys out of the nursery and don't have to give up the 4th bedroom. Now, if that were done, I could actually start working on the nursery...but it's not even close! Well, there is always the bassinet for awhile anyway right?

Alicia: Have you set up the co-sleeper? I've been thinking about getting one. Does it attach directly to your bed?

Also everyone, if you're planning on nursing, pick up some Lansinoh at the baby store, Toys R US, Babies R US, Target...almost everywhere has it. It really helps with tenderness and soreness when you start nursing. You can actually start putting it on in the 3rd trimester to get yourself ready. My sister in law turned me onto it with my first pregnancy and it was a lifesaver.

I hope everyone is doing great. The 3rd trimester is full of little aches and pains isn't it?

Yes, agree heartily on aches and pains. My boys had their checkup yesterday and they both weigh 2 lbs. 11 oz. I'm so proud of them! Now to try and find a place to put them for the next couple months, as they should at least double in weight before coming out...

Cate, I can't believe you still don't know if you've got a boy or a girl in there. How impossible to do the nursery. Although maybe where you are things are not so gender based. It seems in the US they mostly have very pink girly things and very blue boy things - very little in between.

Paige, The co-sleeper does attach to the bed with a little lip, so the baby doesn't roll into the bed with you. Sadly, our bed is too high for it, even with the leg extensions you can get. So we have to use it as a bassinet, not a co-sleeper. I was planning on the Graco Pack N Play, but it only holds up to 15 lbs. Definately not sturdy enough for two, though it might be good for one.

Scan 28 weeks 4 days

Post by Cate »

Hi everyone had another scan today and got picture, baby right size for amount of weeks and all looks well.

I asked why I have been feeling so incredibly uncomfortable the baby is breach at the moment but with lots of time to turn!!! It apparantly is sort of standing up with it's feet right down hence nasty pain which was begining to frighten the life out of me late at night when you have all the crazy what if thoughts or is that just me??????

I know what you mean Alicia about the blue / pink thing there is lots of that here I like gingham but without knowing which to buy bit stuck!!!
I am probably going to re paint heritage ivory (like everywhere else!)then I have seen nice brown teddy border which could go for either, when the baby is born I will get curtains rug etc as to start with will be our room.

We were looking at furniture at the weekend the room isn't massive so I don't want anything too big or dark I was looking at free standing cream coloured wardrobe with light wood top, when I looked round Paul was looking at wooden coloured I thought more masculine furniture or am I perhaps reading to much into it??!!! Who knows went again by myself today! Stay well Cate xxxx
