Hi Girls - I hope you don't mind me joining in ...I have been in Vienna the past 2 weeks (long drawn out move between Munich and Vienna)..with no internet access. Anyway prior to going to Vienna I was being really healthy and it all fell apart...I think the stress of being in a new city again. Anyway drank way too much wine and ate to much junk food (definitely not enough fruits and veggies). I did go jogging but with all the crap I put in my body it didn't help.

Quick question...does anyone have a DH who loves meat and potatoes but you prefer veggies/tofu? How do you cope?? I don't want to make 2 seperate meals but I can not eat what he likes. DH is definitely eating more veggies but not enough for me! I was thinking of eating my big meal at lunch and eating only the veggies for dinner. Any ideas?

Traci,
My dh is the same way. During the weekdays we actually do eat separate dishes in the evening that we each make ourselves. Then on the weekends, we eat more traditionally.

You know how it is.... it's UNFAIR but women just can't eat like men and get away with it

I quit eating my largest meal in the evenings about three years ago. I moved it to lunch. (again, except weekends) My supper is usually cereal or fruit or yogurt or even just popcorn.

The other problem we were having with trying to eat together is that he likes to eat too late for me (past 8 p.m.). He works out hard and can get away with it, but I can't. So, he has his high protein, BIG meal that he makes with quick fix protein items and starch (mostly chicken, rice, egg whites, salsa, cheese, lamb, pork) and rarely any veggies. But he's very self-sufficient and buys into me not eating too much, so he doesn't mind doing it himself.

Our evening time is much more about sharing TV, cocktails  and Srabble and less about food. (And it's no accident, we made a conscious effort to go this way years ago.)

Any girl who can make her man a high-calorie meal and not touch it - is my idol! I am not self-disciplined enough to create a meal like that and deprive myself from having any!!! :x Hats off to the girl who can!

Omigod, girls, i'm facing the same problems too with my DH......

He always have heavy dinner and i've been cracking my head to look up new healthy recipes that we can both benefit from.

I've been on a low-carb diet for the past year, and have actually lost all of 10kgs. I earned every gram by eliminating everything white- namely pasta, bread, rice, potato and much of everything else.
I loaded up on Wholemeal grains on bread and some brown rice occasionally. I switched to extra virgin olive oil whenever i needed to sautee something lightly. I gorged on fresh green leafy veggies whenever i can. I battled not having sweets and ice-cream treats but compensated on low fat yoghurt occasionally.

You know the best thing about losing some pounds?....My co-workers actually noticed a trimmer me before i even realised it. I abstained myself from weighing daily(it could be traumatic, don't you think?)
Dieting is actually fun  (really, girlfriends)if you try not to think so much about losing the pounds on a hi-speed freeway.
Losing weight is not a god-gift miracle that happens overnight. (If that was, darn it i'd have elbowed and bloody clawed my way up to the front line.....)

My quest to lose weight is not quite over yet, and my ultimate goal is to live a healthy life. Thanks to all for sharing your daily health snippets :D

Cheers to health!
Love, Chanteq

The parental visit is a diet-nightmare. They filled the fridge with wine and chocolate and I'm too weak to resist it all. Still (desperately looking for a bright side) they leave on Wednesday so the damage is limited to 5 day's worth....... :)

Debra,
Hang in there! Our parents' generation was all about food, so they come by it honestly. Drink lots of water to help counter balance. :D

I've had a brownie already today and it probably won't be the last!

Hi Girls - back to Vienna this afternoon - the land of cakes and wine...I must show discipline! I am going to test out making a meal for DH and me eating only the veggies for dinner...plus he works very late so must time we are eating dinner at 10pm...not healthy. But I need to make him a meal cuz he doesn't eat all day (forgets or doesn't have time at work).

Will let you all know how it goes on 15.June when I am back in Munich with internet access.

Big hugs, Traci

Debra - hang on in there - enjoy it while they are here and we can work on it when they have gone no poing making yourself miserable

Traci - good luck in Vienna.

My DH eats the same main meal as me but I am struggling because of the snacks (chocolate/biscuits etc) he has between meals :!:

Went for a 30min walk yesterday and I am still being good with the food (although it is starting to get harder :!: ) Mind is heathly - body is NOT still full of cold (god bless lemsip is all I can say)

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and Debra - enjoy the rest of your parents visit - I am the same when my parents are here - I only drink wine when my mum his here to share :!: and they alway insist on taking us out to dinner :!: Did they bring the pedometer :?:

Everyone seems to be doing sooo well !!

Ha ha Julie ... I've a pedometer that reacts well to shaking too ...

Now, I hope I'm not going to bore everybody to death ...

I'm reading a great book at the moment about being tired. One section talks about stress. Two of the things that can bring stress on are 1) not eating regularly and 2) strenuous exercising (if you're not used to it).

Your body see's these actions as a threat (ie. either you are starving, or you are running from danger) and goes into defence mode. This causes the adrenals to produce adrenaline. Two of the hormones produced are Cortisol and DHEA. After a time the DHEA cuts out, and this results in excess Cortisol in your body. Excess Cortisol causes muscle to be turned into sugar for energy. Your metabolism also decreases, and the sugar is then stored as fat - usually around the stomach area. You can actually put weight on.

So, by eating small regular snacks/meals, and by only do very gentle exercise (walking / stretching) if you're not a normally energetic person, seems to me to be a step in the right direction.

Well ....

1. Lots of snacks throughout the day - mostly of fruit

2. Brown basmatti rice and tuna fish for lunch (and it was quite okay Debra ... nothing like the horrible brown stuff I bought last time !)

How's everyone else managed today ..?

Hi just a quick little message -Tracii are you able to get Quorn in Austria? Its a meat substitute (mince is best) and maybe your DH will like it and its good for you. It high in protein and has loads of vitamins too. I think Albert Heijn sell it but not sure if they have a store in austria.

You guys can get back to your healthy talk now - I'm a lost cause at the moment - catching up on 18mths of red wine - i'll be good again soon

I was doing really well until last night.

Do took me to TGI fridays and started off quite well with a steak and house salad. The couple on the next table were sharing this delicious looking dessert. Next minute we had a massive bowl of nuggety things, chocolate icecream, cream and two spoons. It was scrummy but feel so bad today.
