Hey, Hey, Hey!
Everyone is so jazzed about getting fit, I love it!

Jen - I agree, the word diet is soooooo naughty. And glad your headaches are going away. I learned on the boards that our pituitary gland is at the base of our skull and I think our headaches are connected to the IVF drugs we take. My headaches are right in that spot often.

Tracii - your email made me hungry!!! And thanks for the good info from the London Times article on detox tips - makes sense. "Old food rotting in our guts!"... yuk! But I wouldn't be surprised. I've heard stories from people who have gotten colonics (colon cleaned by a machine) and what they see come out of them is not suitable for discussion  My sister was hooked on them for a while (seemed like she got one every month) I remember telling some girlfriends that "My sister is hooked on colonics," and we all paused for a moment and started busting out laughing. Sounded too much like "hooked on phonics," which is an old reading program that was advertised to death in the 80s. :D :? Guess you had to be there.

Anyway, I'm a fast eater also - kinda known for it even. :) I'll take your advice and try to chew more. My problem is that I always have more important things I'd rather be doing, PLUS, I only like food when it is at the perfect temperature it's supposed to be at. Hot food hot and cold food cold. So I eat fast to keep it from changing to room temperature before I get it all down  I must sound like an idiot.

Debra, what is spelt? And thanks for the rice milk idea. I confess, I tried soy just for this detox and bout puked. Good luck with your inlaws desserts! Would it work to just tell them you are detoxing? They'd probably say, "What?" And the tuna I buy says White Albacore Tuna on the can. So I though it counted as white fish. Am I wrong? I'll stop if I am. I buy it at a health food store that only sells things that are researched to be the best - so I assumed it was tuna without mercury. Somebody educate me here if I should just stay away from it regardless.

And Sandra - thanks for the support you always give us! (Still don't understand why you weren't in on this party, but...maybe next time.)

"Fishbones"  ... I was just like you Debra, scared to death to eat fish most of my life for that very reason. I have a nighttime disorder already where I dream I'm choking (3x week for 20 years) and I think fishbones are at the bottom of it. :D

Today:
Breakfast: REAL oats (I think Brits call it porridge?) w/ banana, raisins, honey. First time I've ever made them the hard way - did something wrong cuz they were still a little hard, but ate them anyway.

Lunch: Chicken sandwich on whole wheat bread (made w/out flour), beans, carrots.

Supper: Turkey and veggies.

Still lovin the lemon water! :D
Is anyone else "passing gas" more than normal?

Randa - in regards to the tuna maybe you can ask the health food store..because I have no idea. Rice milk is not too bad...I was scared to try the soy milk  . I remember hooked on phonics!! I can picture the commercial in my head right now. I had a roommate that did the colonics as well...and seemed quite painful what she described and a bit embarrasing...and if I remember correctly a couple of months after she accidentally got pregnant...mmmmm

The weather is beautiful today in Munich..we are going to the biergarten which means water for me :( ..and meeting up with a friend who also got accidentally pregnant...she did not even know she was pregnant for 4 months!! Said her period stopped months before...but is that possible?? I thought you had to have your period to get preggers??? It is all a mystery to me.

This morning I had muesli, rice milk and raspberries...very good and I actually couldn't finish it all.

have a great weekend, Traci

P.S. - yes a bit gassier then usual  and don't be surprised (sorry big TMI)..if near the end or a couple of days after your body wants to get rid of everything...and it will not wait.

   me too

DF just snipped at me that I'd told him my detox wouldn't impact on him at all but there I was filling the house with gas.....TMI I know but really, if this is only Day 3, good grief......

I feel good and light (although haven't shifted a gram) but felt rude at DF's cousin's ignoring the cheesecake, chocolate cake and cheese rolls his 37week pg wife had made.......

Jen, enjoy your trip to Scotland, I hope the weather holds for you.

Randa, I think the 'white' just refers to the colour of the tuna vs. pink, it's not listed by Zita by the by.

I had a colonic once c. 8yrs ago but as a 10 yr veggie at that point nothing too dramatic happened. I certainly didn't feel it was worth continuing.

Randa, what is bread made without flour?? - my turn to ask the Qs now! Spelt is a very, very high protein grain. Some meals call for the whole kernals to be boiled and so it looks like fat rice or barley, but I'm eating it flaked, which looks like oats. Yes we call it porrage (actually here we call it grøt, rhymes with flirt) and the problem with whole oats is that they take AGES to cook. Many people soak them overnight in milk/juice etc to speed up the prep in the morning. I eat quick-cook porrage most days, year round but I've bought the real thing to eat later this week.

What's occured to me is how often I eat bread. Norwegians are famous for eating it 3 meals a day (and they do) and so we've always lots around. And I really miss my tea......

Sandra, I eat prepared small salmon fillets (which have always been bone-free) maybe 2-3 times a week but have never tried to bone a fish. I tried on Thursday but realised I was losing interest in life so switched to salmon. Yes the Norwegians eat tonnes of salmon, they are immensely proud of how good the local stuff is.

Hope everyone is doing well, we're almost half way there :)
hugs

How is everyone surviving the weekend?? Just think the hardest is almost done :D I was bad last night with dinner...I had 2 glasses of red wine   ...but it looked so good and I had no discipline...but the rest of dinner I was very well behaved...as everyone was eating the starter of yummy pasta - I had tomatoe and onion salad, for main course sea bass and veggies, and dessert a bowl of wild berries (everyone else had ice cream and tiramisu)...but the berries were really good and I enjoyed them :D ...Oh and I was very good at the biergarten..I drank water!! (how boring but my friend is preggers so she was also drinking water so I wasn't alone :D )

Right now I am making hummus..just cooking up the chickpeas and will probably eat on a bed of arugula for lunch and for dinner veggies.

One thing I have noticed my meals are more creative..I use alot more herbs and different veggies and/or fruits together.

This detox is also alot easier then the first one...maybe because I know what to expect or body is adjusting better..who knows. But I am feeling good and starting to get the 'clean feeling'.

Hi Traci, glad you enjoyed your dinner. Me too......6 courses but all tiny and v. light. 3 were white fish, 1 mushroom consomme - an espresso cup's worth, 1 cheese (miniscule) and a poached pear. Nothing heavy, no sauces, all totally wonderful. 1 glass champers, 2 white wine. Left the restaurant feeling very satisfied but not remotely heavy or full. Roll on next year's visit.......

Back on the detox. I too am feeling 'clean'.

Let's go girls! We're on Day 4 the end is in sight, although I'm considering trying to have half my normal meals from the detox list from now on.

Tracii - what willpower! You had berries when everyone else was having ice cream  I think you did very well to only give in to the wine.

And Debra - you read my mind. I was also thinking that I want to incorporate many aspects of this way of eating into my normal life. It has made me creative also, and try things I have never tried.

It hit me yesterday that I really miss dairy!!! I think I can live without the red meat, but the no dairy is starting to hurt. I'm not giving in though. Oh! And I miss wine. For my cholesterol I had gotten in the habit of having a glass every night, and I miss that.

Today and tomorrow are the hardest days, don't you think? Only fruits and veggies. Nothing from the B list :( Not even nuts! It's only two days.

I bought and cooked a head of cabbage for the first time in my life! It turned out pretty good, I think. After blanching, I sauted it in organic chicken broth and balsamic vinegar, salt/pepper to taste. Lots of flavor. My dh ate all that I didn't.

Last night I broiled marinated sole and made a spinach salad. Tasty.

More going on each day in my digestive system. Lots of noises and stuff.

Randa, hate to say this so late but Zita says nothing about including chicken broth or vinegar but definitely says no salt. She doesn't mention avoiding pepper though.....

I'm lucky that I don't eat meat so can't miss it now. I do miss yoghurt though and skimmed milk that I drink by the glass normally.

What was the no-flour bread? doesn't that only leave yeast, salt and water?

Today has been tiresome, I visited some friends and they had nothing to offer me outside of what they'd made (coffee and waffles). I had to drink tap water as that was the only option. Water here is super clean and low in sodium etc. but still..... Tonight's dinner was a HUGE bowl of soup. I softened a chopped onion and 3 cloves of garlic in olive oil, threw in 8 halved mushrooms and then a cupful or two of red lentils with a good amount of crushed coriander seeds, about a litre of water and YUM! There's enough for tomorrow lunch too. Feeling very, very full right now.

My problem is drinking enough. I can't get excited about water or herbal tea after the 3rd cup of the day. I made the soup very wet to make up for it and will have an apple later.

Things will get tough for the rest of the detox as DF has 3 days off.

Still feeling good and definitely cleaner somehow, psychosomatic I'm sure.

Hope everyone is feeling strong and determined.

Debra - Your soup sounds VERY yummy ... You made me laugh that it was v. wet soup. I know what you mean though. I might just have a go at it myself, even without the detox. I tend to drink lots of water anyway .. We've got a Britta filter jug, and it makes water tons better .. you can just taste the lack of chlorine, fluoride etc .. You all sound like you're doing really well ... I'm really proud of you all .... (I'm sat here feeling really stodgy and fat having been out for tea last night, and luch today .. and about to have something yummy soon ... might just switch that yumminess for cottage cheese on cracker bread .. will that gain me some points ) .. Well done girls !

yes Sandra, crispbread and cottage cheese will win you brownie points but is it tasty and satisfying "NO". Will you want more to eat in an hour's time "YES". My soup only took 30mins to prep + cook, if you've time.

I'm feeling shamefaced as on Friday at the pool, 3 mums for a baby swimming class were getting changed into their BIKINIS...yep, all 3 were in 2-piece bikinis despite having 4m old babies, this being Norway all changing is open, no cubicles, I couldn't help but see. 2 had beach-perfect figures and the 3rd was the same as me, 2 years on from DD. After this detox, a carefully controlled diet is in order for the month before tmt.

Debra,
I'm sorry I forgot to answer your question about the flourless bread. It is multigrain and the ingredients say: Organic whole sprouted wheat, organic whole sprouted triticale, organic whole sprouted rye, water, organic vital wheat gluten, organic whole sprouted soybeans, organic evaporated cane juice, yeast, sea salt, citric acid. It's made by Silver Hills Bakery and says on the label "Bread Made Without Flour" also says "No Dairy."

I went out and bought this bc the list Tracii gave us for the detox said nothing white. We have rye bread in the house all the time, but I thought it was white. So I sought out a bread that met the detox standards of no white flour and no dairy. Guess I forgot about the salt.

So have you been completely eliminating salt? How? Isn't it in just about everything? What bread (if any) are you eating? Cause bread has salt. I am not a big salt user to begin with (rarely reach for the salt shaker). So it should be fairly easy to cut it out - however, what do we do about bread - even non-white bread has salt, I think. ??? Guess we can't have whole grain bread either. ?? :(

Also, the chicken broth, I thought when we eat chicken white meat (which is allowed on this) that it contains chicken juice. The broth I bought has no additives or preservatives, so I thought it would be okay. It is the strained juice from a cooked chicken (however, that would mean some dark meat helped to make it, so maybe that's why it shouldn't be included)

So, I have misinterpreted the list Tracii shared. I thought it was mostly a guideline, but sounds like if it isn't on the list, we aren't supposed to eat it??? Am I right?

Thanks for keeping me honest!
I hope I haven't totally ruined my detox.
I'm a slow learner, what can I say.

Debra .. I know my df is itching to go on hol, but even thinking about the beach makes me sweat ... I've even put so much weight on since Cuba in March ... I blame it on the total no smoking .. got to do something (like eat) instead ...... no cigs now for 6 month, but lots of flab to show for it .. How do Norwegian mums get / keep in shape ...? exercise, or healthier diet .. or a combination ?

Randa, we're all doing the best we can :) I've been eating non-organic fruit as it's very difficult to find here. I'd have to drive to the other side of town to find some.

Wheat is on the foods to avoid I'm afraid so I've not had any bread except a dark pumpernickel type pre-sliced stuff which is bl**dy awful. It's like wet-crispbread......I've had one slice at day with my soup. I've cooked everything without salt and eaten nothing prepared so salt's been quite easy to avoid.

If the Foods to Avoid haven't been detailed before;

*non-organic foods
*alcohol
*caffeinated drinks incl. decaffeinated tea/coffee
*oj
*sugar and foods containing lots of suger
*refined carbs - white bread, pasta, rice, cakes, biscuits etc.
*red meat
*dairy products (organic yoghurt is OK)
*wheat
*foods containing additives + preservatives
*packed and processed foods
*salt

In answer to your questions, I've not found a commerical fresh bread that doesn't have wheat in it somewhere, even a tiny bit. I think the term white meat is used to indicate chicken and turkey not nec. the bits of the particular bird. If your broth had nothing other than bird + water, it should be fine but salt would normally be in there too.

The bottom line is, we're all doing FANTASTICALLY well and eating considerably more healthily than normal. We're probably cutting out 99% of the things to avoid which is great and do-able, given we don't live like cave-dwelling hermits snacking on berries (Traci is obviously an exception lol lol). If I can keep to how I'm doing for the next 3 days, I'll consider this detox a success. As should we all.

hugs
Debra.
