hi jo and tammy,

thank you for your regards. hubby and i were able to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time yesterday. what a relief!

however, the ultrasound tech was concerned about the source of the spotting. so she went and talked to the ob and even though i didn't have an appt with the ob yesterday, they squeezed me into her busy schedule.

she took one look in there and determined that the bleeding was from a cervical polyp, well, actually, there are 3 of them in there. the polyps were first discovered at the embryo transfer, but the clinic decided to go on w/ the transfer regardless becuase polyps don't usually cause any harm. well, since then, one of them has grown. the ob isn't too concerned except that now she referred us to go for genetic screening at 12 weeks. only to be on the safe side and to find out w/ another detailed u/s where exactly does the poly originated from. i just hope that it isn't too close to the opening of the cervix. arghh...

do you know if genetic screening is a standard procedure?

anyway, thanks for listening.

thanks,
jt

JT:

I had the genetic screening (1st trimester) too. They normally recommend it for us ladies over 35, since as we age, we have an increased risk of having a baby with genetic abnormalities. If you have any genetic abnormalities in your family, they may also test. For the 1st trimester screening they do 2 things:

1) Nuchal scan: It is where they perform an ultrasound and measure the fluid accumulation at the back of the baby's neck. If the fluid accumulation is more than 2.5 mm, your baby could be at an increased risk of having downs syndrome. (Mine was 1.2mm)
2) Blood test: They also do a blood test.

My results were as follows:

Since I am 42, my risk of having a baby with downs is 1:63, but after they tested me, my risk when down to 1:820. My risk for trisomy 18 is 1:8100.

I hope this helps.

elleR:

Glad to hear that your babies are doing well.

Take care all,
Tammy

Hello All,

Hope you are all doing ok. I've not been able to get on for a few days, every time I clicked on message boards I got critical error! Anyone else had this? So frustrating!!

Lara congratulations with your BFP. A lot of women have spotting through there pregnancies, especially in the first trimester. If it becomes heavy or bright red is when you only really need to worry. If you need some reassurance, if you contact your local hospital (where you are planning to have the baby), most of them will have an early pregnancy unit and I'm sure they will be more than happy to help you. Best of luck :D

I went for my nuchal fold scan yesterday. It was amazing, I've never seen a scan so clear (and I've had a lot!). The thickness was only 1mm so my chances of a downs baby went from 1:297 to 1:1672 which is the same as a 15 year old. The heartbeat was nice and strong at 152, we got to see all four chambers, we also saw all the fingers and toes, it was fantastic. It was going hyper when we first got there then it just stopped, put their hands up to their face in a cup and fell asleep!

That's it for me now until I see my consultant at 17 weeks. I can't believe I'm over 12 weeks already, the first trimester seems to be flying by!

Hope the rest of you are ok.

Have a great weekend

Jo

Lara,

I had some brownish spotting twice, but there were no problems. I would agree with Jo, some spotting is normal and if it becomes bright red or heavy then you need to worry. If you are still concerned, call you doctor's emergency number. We sure may them enough to calm our fears.

Jo,

I could not get onto the message boards either. Your nuchal scan numbers are great!! It does make you feel much better doesn't it?
Are you having Amnio or CVS?

Regards,
Tammy

Hi Tammy,

No I'm not going to have an amnio or cvs. With those figures I don't feel like I need to. Yes I'm very relieved. Although I'm 34 I was still a little worried as I am classed as "an older mother".

How are things with you? I'm a little swollen today. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come as it's too early! I was weighed at the hospital on Thursday, OMG I'm put on 2 stone already - I'm just so hungry all the time - is anyone else like this?

How are you Lara? Has it calmed down yet?

Jo,

I agree with you. We were only going to consider having the diagnostic tests, if our numbers were not good on the 1st trimester screening. I have gained a few lbs, but I don't think I've gained more than 5. I have been reluctant to weigh myself. :? I have to eat every 3 to 4 hours, or I will start feeling sick. Before I go to bed, I have been having a piece of toast and a glass of milk.

Lara: I hope you are doing better.

Regards,
Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I too have some toast before bed but mainly because of the diabetes, I have to take more insulin just before better so it's better to have something in there to save having a night hypo!

Not feeling too great the past day. I collasped yesterday, I think I'm just exhausted, not sleeping well. I went to the doctors today and he's told me to rest for a couple of weeks - easier said than done with a 4 year old starting school next week and a 3 year old having surgery next week too! I've got frozen shoulder (in both shoulders) but as I'm pregnant I am unable to take any medication, this doesn't help with the sleep.

My friend is going to take the girls out blackberry picking in a bit so I'm going to try and get some sleep then.

Moan over!! Hope everyone else is ok. It's gone very quiet, I think a few of you have moved over to the 2nd trimester!

Take care

Jo

Rachel,

I'm so sorry to hear your news. I will be thinking of you.

Jo,

Wow, you have your hands full with two young ones. This will be my first baby. DH has a 13 year old son from his 1st marriage. Take care of yourself! I hope you get to feeling better. I guess it is time for me to switch to the 2nd trimester site, but I feel like I'm just getting to know you girls here!

Take care all,
Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I think there only seems to be me left at the moment anyway and I'll be over in a couple of days!

13 - nice age!! lol but I think girls are worse than boys!

Still feel awful. I'm so puffy and where I've swollen it is so bruised. Got about an hours sleep last night so look like a zombie today! I've got Emma's teacher coming round to see her at 9 so I guess I'd better try and make myself presentable!

Take care

Jo

Jo,

It seems that the 2nd trimester site is not very active. We need to get over there and start chatting :D

Trust me, a 13 year old boy can be a lot of trouble too. We have joint custody, but sometimes I'm ready to ship him off to his mother's full time. He is very good at manipulating both sides. He plays one side against the other. Oh well, I will have my precious baby soon to occupy my time.

You poor thing! Only getting 1 hour of sleep is not enough. Hopefully, you can take a nap, once the teacher leaves.

Take care all,
Tammy

hi ladies, please help me, I am worrying myself sick.
I am 9weeks 1day pg. My beta level was 1295 at 19days post transfer . My scan at 6 weeks showed one little beanie with a heartbeat.
However.... I have absolutely no symptoms. I feel fine, full of energy. I am not nauseous or sick. My boobs are OK. I have convinced myself that the baby isn't growing and that something is wrong. I have nightmares about miscarriage. :(

My next scan isn't until 12weeks. Can anyone help or shed any light on this? Sorry to be such a worrier!! Thank you

Hugs

Hi Anna

Make the most of it. Some women don't experience any symptoms in pregnancy. My friend didn't even get a bump and was still a size 10 when she went into hospital not knowing why she had bad tummy pains, she had no idea she was pregnant and gave birth to an 8lb little girl!

I really wouldn't worry. I was only sick the week before the pregnancy test, since then I haven't been sick at all.

When is your booking in appointment with your midwife? In our area we have this at 10 weeks. Is yours a hospital run antenatal or do you have community midwives? Maybe you could give them a ring just to ease your mind. Most of the antenatal hospitals will have an early pregnancy unit you can phone. Try to not stress too much as this won't help! :D

Tammy I'll be over there tomorrow, I think that's when I'm officially in the second trimester!

Still not feeling great. I'm getting no sleep. I don't know whether I need to phone my midwife or my GP. It sounds strange but I feel like something is attacking all my joints, I am in so much pain, my wrists, thumbs, shoulders, pelvis, ankles, toes - I don't think it's pregnancy related as I've never heard of it before, maybe I should just call NHS Direct, I can't carry on like this it's awful!

I hope everyone else is doing ok. The sun is out and it's a beautiful day!

Lots of love

Jo
