Froozen embryos and success rates

Post by belly belly »

Dear Someone...anyone,

I have just had my ER yesterday and because I had too many eggs my transfer has been cancelled. 1st IVF and gutted, we've waited over a year to get this far. 22 eggs recovered and 16 fertilised.

Now I am worried that our cycle will be from frozen not fresh and I have read that the rates of a live birth from frozen is 50% less than that for a fresh cycle. Does anyone know whether this is true?

How many should be thawed at one time? I have been told it will be 8 and 8 which seems high risk for wastage.

And finally does anyone know what the process is for the next stage...using the embryos on a 'constructed cycle ( as I don't have regular periods?) I am in the Uk so does anyone know what the UK procedures are? And what I need to do next?

All help appreciated.

From a very disappointed... Belly Belly

Hi! The same thing happened to me. I got the dreaded Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome just two weeks ago. Because of the over-stimulation, your estrogen levels are just too high and would not allow for good implantation in the uterus (at least that is how I understand it). My clinic stated that doing a frozen embryo transfer has its benefits. Your lining is more likely to allow implantation. They actually have higher success rates for FETs (at my clinic). Good luck and keep happy thoughts. It is disappointing but better for you and your babies in the end.

Belly Belly; I am sorry that you are so disappointed not to have an ET right away. I think 16 ferts is fantastic!!! FET rates vary widely by clinic. At mine, the FET rate is higher than fresh. My clinic just does blast transfers, so this info may or may not apply. I know if i ever (fingers crossed) get multiple embies to freeze, all will be thawed, the best two transferred and the others frozen at blast stage. For one, they are able to synchronize the lining of the uterus with the stage of the blast. On fresh cycles, due to manipulation, the embies are often one day behind natural development, which means they would be transferring on day 6 instead of day 5 (when the uterine lining would be more receptive). I don't know what a 'constructed cycle' is, so can't help you with that one. Hope this helps. Find out from your RE/clinic how their fresh numbers compare to frozen.

Hang in there...Everything is crossed for ya...

Hi Belly belly,
i am doing IVF in leeds, On my fresh cycle i had 20 eggs 18 fertilised but only 12 made it good enough to use. i transferred 2 fresh, froze 10. my clinic said to do a 3,3,4 defrost, so 3 attempts.
Just had a frozen cycle 3 thawed 2 good, 1 poor, transferred good 2 got a positive, unfortunatley it has now ended, I am hoping to go for another FET in january.
the success of FET is 20% average, and fresh is about 25% so not much difference, these results are fron 2004 though.
I felt better with a frozen cycle (drug controlled ) than fresh as your body has healed from the retreival.
hope that helps.

4th times a charm,1-IVF, 3xFET's, 2 chemical

Hi Belly Belly

Im going to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary - where abouts are you going? I too had my fresh (1st) cycle of IVF cancelled because they retrieved too many eggs (21). 13 were fertilized and frozen and I just had my natural FET yesterday (2 wee embies on board grade a and b)

The success rates for FET in this clinic is just the same as fresh. They defrosted 4 and put 2 back in and we have 9 still frozen so if we are unsuccessful this time then we are hoping to get another 2 trys.

Good luck to you - FET has worked for many people and can be just as successful

Hi Ladies

I had the same problem when I had my IVF . I was at the risk of high OHSS.
Doctor did not transfer the fresh embryos . Because she said that it might be at the risk of my life .
So we just decided to wait for next couple of months .
Now we are doing the procedure for FET .
I AM on medication right now . I am taking Suprefact Nasal Spray . Even i am taking Estrogen tablets .
My FET is on 18 Dec hopefully . But before that I have ultrasound . Then doctor will explain me the exact situation . Lets' hope for the best .
But I am little bit scared about the FET . Let's see how it works ?

Hi, i know exactly how you feel, my first cycle was a total freeze all due to risk of OHSS (22 eggs collected, 13 fertilised and frozen).
We had waited almost 5 years, what with tests and waiting lists etc to get to that stage just to end up waiting further. I was devastated.
Where in Scotland are you? My treatment like a previous poster was at the Glasgow Royal aswell.
I can't help you with the type of cycle you will be having as mine were natural cycles because my periods were regular.
At the time i had my treatment the clinics FET sucess rates were higher than fresh.
My FET cycles were a lot less stressful as i had no drugs to take, didn't have to go for scans. I just had bloods done every other day from day 10 to test for the surge then 2 days later the embies were transferred.
We were very lucky and had a 100% successful thaw rate, the first time they thawed 7 of my 13 embies and transferred 2 grade 1s, unfortunately that cycle was negative. The following month they thawed my remaining 6 embies and transferred another 2 grade 1s, this time we were fortunate and it was a positive result. I was quite shocked at the amount they thawed each time but they said they do that to give us the best chance of successful thawing and get the best embies out of them.
Our gorgeous daughter Kady is almost 7 months old now so FET does work.
Just let your body recover and get right back in there, you have a great amount of embies and they will transfer your best ones.
Good luck to you all.
Take care,
Lotsa love

Hi Michelle

Glad to hear the reply from u.

I am not in Scotland . I am in Calgary Canada . We are doing the procedure with the Regional Fertility Program .

They collected about 39 eggs and about 23 of them gets fertilized and all of them are frozen now .

I think they will do the thaw process and then transfer the Embryos.
I did not undersatnd why you had to wait for 5 years. Like your body was not ready to do the Embryo transfer or there was such a long waiting list over there.

I have my ultrasound on Friday . Then doctor will tell us the exact situation . She will check my Utreine linning . I am little bit scared .

Hi Arsh, just a quick reply to your questions.
The original poster (belly belly) is from Scotland hence the Scotland question and about our 5 year wait, it was roughly 5 years from when we first went to the doctors to actually starting our first cycle. The waiting lists to get tests etc done were very long, then we had another very long wait after we had been referred to the fertility clinic.
This treatment lark is just one long waiting game, but our little miracle was well worth the wait, she is the most loved and precious little thing in our life.
Good luck with your upcoming FET it is nothing to be scared of, in fact i found it much easier and a lot less stressfull than the fresh cycle.
Take care,
Lotsa love
