Advice Needed -- possible ectopic?

Post by sml »

Could anyone please explain what it means to have a possible ectopic pregnancy?

Had a pregnancy test on Friday and was told first that there was a 50-50 chance I was pregnant and that they would send my results to the lab for clarification. A few agonizing hours later, was told that yes, it was a BFP and to come back today for another blood test.

After my blood test today, I learned (many agonizing hours later) that my HCG levels had not increased signifcantly -- 38 from 32 on Friday. The nurse said it could either mean it was "not a viable pregnancy" or a "possible ectopic" and explained that meant the embryos may have implanted outside of the womb. I am to return on Wednesday for another test. I'm really confused as to what this means -- though she did say it meant that my pregnancy was no longer "viable."

What does this really mean? Am I awaiting an impending miscarriage? (I'm only in very very early pregnancy). Or if ectopic, what are the next steps? Any advice would be much appreciated.

A little about my history: This is my third IVF attempt, after 2 failed attempts, and then a myomectomy to remove 9 large fibroids about one year ago. DH and I tried naturally for the last several months and then decided to give another go at IVF. Everything went very smoothly -- good response to the hormones, decent number of eggs, 1 blasto and 1 almost-blasto were transferred back (first time we'd ever made it to blastocyst). Sigh. :?

My wife had two ectopic pregnancies. Her numbers were doubling and tripling then they came crashing down. They sent her over for a u/s and couldnt see anything in the uterus so we knew right then it was in the tube. They had us come in the next day and gave my wife a shot to terminate the pregnany before it could do any damage to her. The most awful thing I have had to watch my wife endure.

I am really not telling you this to scare you. I am just letting you know what happened in OUR case.

Many thanks for your note. I'm so very sorry that you and your wife had to endure this twice! How gut wrenching! I wish you both the best as you continue your journey.

They are still monitering me and it is too early for an ultrasound at this stage but I'm trying to prepare myself for whatever scenario presents itself.
