Hi!!

Sabi- sorry to hear about your BP. Try to take it easy over the holidays next week. Don't let the kiddos run you ragged!

MG- you seem so organized! I wish I was. I am taking next week off from work to try to make some progress.

Ange- You are with me! Boys!! We are so excited as well. Should be fun!

I had another U/S yesterday to get the nasal bone shot. Everything is great. It was fun to see him again. He put a little more fat on his face, so he should grow into that nose. Ha ha. Neither one of us have big noses, but there is a grandfather with a huge honker! I gained another pound, so up 3 now. Doc said that I should keep gaining at this point. So after appointment I had Pumpkin Pancakes to celebrate..Yum...But then felt guilty and got on treadmill...

I registered last week at Babies R Us and have spent the rest of the week second-guessing everything I picked out. Ugh. Crib came in and we managed to figure it out, but that is it for progress. Hopefully I will get a lot done next week! I feel great, except for tossing and turning a lot while asleep. I try to stay on left side, but my hip starts to kill me about 2am every night. My next appointment is in 3 weeks for glucose test. Not looking forward to that one. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!! We truly have a lot to be thankful for this year.

How's everyone doing?

I had my 25 week GP appt last week, and she mentioned that I should have the gestational diabetes screening done. She also said that if I were 25 years old (since I have absolutely NO risk factors other than age, which IMO is a questionable one), she would not necessarily ask me to do it. I am pretty stubborn, and I had a little discussion with her.... and now have done lots more research. Which is..... inconclusive - hahaha! It really depends on whose (uncomprehensive) studies you read....

My Dr. checks my protein and glucose urine levels every month, and I have always had a neutral result for the glucose, so that's reassuring.

I am leaning towards not doing the test, but only because I am convinced that I would pass the test and I do not want my LO to be sugar shocked (nor my system) if at all possible. If I had some real risk factors, it would be a different story, of course. ;)

Carolyn: As you are in the UK (I believe), do you know whether it is standard practice to be tested there, across the board, or with only one risk factor (vs previous GD or other diabetes history)? I am just curious, as it appears that the USA tend to test way more than Canada and perhaps other places....

AFM - lots of swimming and movement - and when we listened to the baby's heartbeat last week, I made sure to first have some orange juice to get it moving awake...which worked. First, it kicked the doppler, and then it developed the cutest set of hiccups which we could hear on the doppler - it took a while for the Dr to find its heartbeat again!

I have now read my hypnobirthing book resource (I have decided against taking classes but am just going it alone) and have started working on the techniques. Many of them are familiar to me, for example from singing and from pain management techniques I worked on myself for chronic pain issues I have. But, it is a great, gentle approach, and I appreciate it.

I am also appreciating yoga more and more and realizing just how much it has been helping me.... and will continue to help. I am even considering taking two classes side by side just so I don't miss too much yoga over the holidays when they close up.

I still have pain, but am getting massages (from SO.... nice!) in the hip joints, lower back and buttock areas before bed, which helps enormously. I am going to look into some stretches I have heard can really reduce this pain, too. If anyone is interested, let me know, and I can post the source I found....

Hope all is well and no one is too tired yet!

Hey, Ange, nice to hear all was well and you got to see more this time on the scan!

I think our scans are over for a while - they may wish to take a look at the placenta in another month or so, but otherwise, all is well here, too!

Carolyn, the aches and sharp pains, etc. that I had for a few weeks (about 3 or so) have actually subsided. Not sure what I did. I did get some massage evenings before bed, because the worst time by far was during the night. However, now even without massages, I am okay during the night - only little twinges which are very manageable and I get more sleep than ever!!

All I can tell you is that when I looked it up, my pain which felt like sciatica, was not sciatica (apparently, sciatica is not really related to pregnancy, contrary to popular belief - only if you already had it or were developing it would it become more apparent) - what I had/have is pelvic girdle pain. In the hips, sacrum, buttocks, down the legs at times, and it was so painful that I really could not sleep. Is this what you have?

I am sure it is more common with multiples.

I think that lowering my major activity level (bending over lots, lifting, over exertion - ie, the yard work I did in the fall!) helped, and then keeping my body physically moving and not staying in one position for too long (especially sitting) helped it reduce.

I did use pillows in bed when it was at its worst, and now I still use one pillow between my legs, hips and feet whenever I sleep on my side.

I hope you find some relief, since I know it is quite painful!!

AFM - the little Sweet Pea is just rarin' along, kicking, flipping, punching, headbutting, floating around and just generally putting on a great show. It is so entertaining, and I love it! I am slowly able to identify a head vs and foot or the spine, but only once in a while. Other times I am at a loss as to what is sticking out, or what exactly is stuck under my ribcage. I have been tickled again twice more, which is wonderful - it actually makes me laugh.

PS - I have decided against having the GD screen test done, after copious amounts of research of articles and studies (thank you also for your input, Carolyn). I know my Dr will not be happy, but I am. ;)

Take care, pregnant mums!

Hi Ladies!

I hope we are all quiet because we are having smooth sailing! I had my 1 hour glucose test and failed!! We were all shocked. My doctor even had me come back and repeat it. I have been doing all the right things - eating right, working out, very few carbs and sweets...no risk factors, no family history. The only mark I have against me is being 35 years old. I have only gained 9 pounds total since my transfer date. So....now I have to do the lovely 3 hour test. Doc says that almost 50% take the 3 hour test and pass. If I have it, I want to treat it. She told me to continue eating healthy and we will see what happens with three hour test. Has anyone else encountered trouble with this?? I wouldn't be so upset about it, if I had not been doing so well with lifestyle!

Hi Daisy,

I realize you may have had your GD test already by now, but one thing I have read (a lot) about is that women had to be really careful what they ate in the previous 12 hours for even the 1-hour test (although they tell you not to worry and only to eat something small in the morning, or whatever (the instructions vary), even a high carb pasta meal the night before, for example, can affect the test and give a 'false' positive. In fact, research shows that the false positives on both tests are extremely high (off the top of my head, I seem to recall about 40%). This is from peer-reviewed scientific journal research, not anecdotal.

So, if you were doing everything right, you may in fact not have GD at all. Your 3 hour test results may or may not be "correct".... and you may or may not end up changing your eating habits (or adding insulin to your regime) for the right reasons.

This information is one of the main reasons I chose not to do the test. (by the way, my ONLY risk factor was also age: 38 )

Apparently it is very common to test everyone in the US, but in Canada and other parts of the world, it is not an automatic test, but depends on the Dr. Some will request it selectively based on risk factors, and some will not run it at all (as they do not find it useful). The risk factors for GD are the same ones that would put you at risk of having a macrosomic (overly large) baby anyway: overweight or history of diabetes (and sometimes age, although no one can agree on a cut-off). However, these things do not necessarily mean that you are GD or should be altering your diet. Most women who end up with macrosomic babies actually do NOT have GD, interestingly. And, many others who are diagnosed as having GD, later go on to have average or small for size babies, regardless of the dietary precautions they take.

Anyway, to end my soapbox, the main risk involved in the false positives of GD tests (or even any positive results) are that there is an increased unnecessary intervention rate by OBs, mainly involving early induction, even when the baby seems to be doing well, and then either planned or unplanned c-sections.... often way too early for the baby to be ready to be born yet (37-39 weeks, depending on the woman, when many babies are still developing). This is obviously dangerous for the baby in the opposite direction.

Anyway, good luck, and I hope this helped a bit. ;)

I am finally big (straight out in front), baby is sitting nicely breech on my right side, facing back, with its head just over my navel. Near my heart. :) No real complaints on this end, I can happily say!! Sometimes I don't even feel pregnant still.... but then baby moves and I feel soooo large!

Cheers, everyone - please peek in when you can!!

MG, thanks for your notes on the GD test. If I had it to do again, I wouldn't take the test.

The three hour test was by far the WORST. I had to be at hospital at 6am, which meant leaving my house at 5am. Drink an even stronger Glucose mix that made me feel so horrible, I just knew I was going to throw up! The only thing that kept me from just puking it up was that they said I would have to start all over if I threw up. I kept it down and than had my blood drawn (not a prick, but a full draw) 4 times.

The end result: passed every time frame. I knew it would be fine. I guess I am relieved that I defnitely do not have it, but I wish I had not gone through all of the horrible testing.

Not much else going on around here. Still feel great, still working out. I LOVE all of the movement that my little Lawson produces. I love the way my body is changing and just knowing that he is there. I never thought I would enjoy pregnancy so much. I have loved every moment. We are just so thankful and can't wait to wake up each morning. One day closer to meeting the little guy!

I hope that you and all your families have a wonderful Christmas and Holiday Season!!

Hi Ladies, sorry I have been absent for a while. This time of the year is absolutely crazy at my job, so I've been trying very hard not to let it cause me undue stress and anxiety. We are still moving right along with our pregnancy. Our little boy is measuring about 2 weeks ahead (at least he was as of 3 weeks ago), so the doctor has already told us that we will need to discuss our "options" in the near future. We have another measuring u/s a week from today, so we will see how things look at that time. They are estimating that he will be about 4 1/2 pounds at only 31 weeks. That means I am on track for a 9+ pound baby... Yikes! I keep telling myself this is a good thing in the event that he makes his arrival early. At least he will have some weight on him which should help the situation. Other than that, I am just eating like crazy. I am truly amazed by the women who can manage to only gain 15 or so pounds during this process. I will have A LOT of work to do following his birth to get back in shape. How is everyone else doing?

Baylor-
Hey, congrats!!!! I remember you on this site from a few years back and the heartache you went through, and so glad to see you coming along in your pregnancy! Just want you to know, they thought my little guy was going to be 9+ pounds, and scared me into a c-section. Worst mistake! He was 8 pounds even, and knowing what I know now, I would MUCH rather have gone natural. C-section recovery was TOUGH. Just some food for thought...

Happy Pregnancy!!

Hi Ladies -

Sorry I haven't been on here for awhile. Between job hunting and the holidays things have been hectic. It seems like everyone is sailing along really well. Yeah!!!!

Well, I've had a couple bumps in the road. Because of the complications with my last pregnancy (eclampsia and HELLP syndrome) my doctor has been watching me like a hawk. So, I've had weekly appts since week 26. My platelet count is dropping and my protein count is rising. Neither are good signs. I have to do a 24 hour urine collection weekly, along with several tubes of blood that test for kidney and liver function. On top of that, I landed myself in the hospital for a night with a stomach virus (LOTS of vomiting and diarhea) and they thought I had a urinary tract infection so they kept me overnight for IV fluids and baby monitoring. Got to come home yesterday. Had my weekly check up today and my urine dip is now also positive for protein which it had not been before (only the 24 hour test was showing protein).

So, I'm mentally in a bad place right now. I'm really worried about not making it to 37 weeks. The baby was measuring 3lbs 12 oz at 30 weeks so at least it is a good size for how far along I am. I'm swollen and uncomfortable and have gained 5 pounds in the last week (only 15 total prior to that.)

Sorry to be a downer... It just helps to vent. Only my husband really understands how serious things are. Other people just nod and smile when they ask how I am.

Hope you all continue to have uneventful pregnancies. Not far to go!!!!

Hugs to all!

julie,
keep the faith. 30 weeks is good. almost 4 lbs. stay off your feet & take
it easy. We should be used to the tough road. sounds like you're in good
hands. stay away from the salt. i'll keep you in my prayers. pma & talk to your baby about not coming out-that's what i do everyday. sounds silly but one never knows. thanks for the update. take care my dear.
